Hello,I was cruising around on EBAY last night and was looking at the auto-darkening welding helmets. I saw that they varied greatly in price. Also, I saw that the speed at which they change from light to dark varies.  I saw at least 3 different times....1/10,000....1/20,000 and 1/30,000 of a second.  Each one of those times is very fast, but the eye is complicated beyond belief also.  Does the 1/10,000 of a second helmet hurt your eyes more than the 1/30,000 of a second helmet? Who knows this information...is it written up somewhere in a medical document? Where is the proof? How does one know for sure which one to buy? These are the questions I am pondering!Beadhead
Reply:Is there a 1/30,000 type? fastest I think is 1/25,000 for AD shade blinkingUnit in my fab shop dept:my good hand and team that trust me...A lone welder make art... a village full of welder make Miracles...
Reply:Get the one that has four sensors . I have two on my Jackson helmet and I have been flashed becuase of an obstruction that I was not aware of .
Reply:When it comes to welding helmets (eye PROTECTION), the most expensive you can reasonably afford is probably the one you should go with.  Man, when it comes to something like that, don't try to save a dime!  Also, the faster it dims the better, mine is 1/20,000 but like was mentioned before, I've been flashed before using mine, and am currently in the market for a more expensive one!Have a Jeep Cherokee?  Click Here!
Reply:i have the one from northern tool for $50 and it works great.
Reply:If you can believe what the manufacturers say, you don't need to worry about the speed of the darkening. The helmets are supposed to block 100% of the U.V.  rays, even when not darkened. So anyone getting flashed, you shouldn't have to worry about it burning your eyes. The darkening is to make things better  and more comfortable, to be able to see the weld puddle better. Maybe your local welding supply will let you try them, and see which you can see better with.
Reply:Take a look at this link from Lincoln.http://www.lincolnelectric.com/knowl...dinglenses.asp
Reply:I've been using a $50 one from harbor freight for a few years with no problems.  I'm just a hobby welder but I can't believe how good it's been.  It's adjustable to.

Reply:I just tossed 5 of the HF hoods, none lasted longer than 6 months and the lens had darkened down to where the puddle couldn't be seen. Jackson, Miller, Lincoln and Speedglas are all very good helmets. The better the optics are the better you can see what you are doing and the better your eyes are protected. I use a Jackson right now and am fairly well satisfied with it, but may go to a Miller Digital Elite in the near future. My dad has a Lincoln that he likes and my business partner has a Miller that he likes. I actually like certain aspects of the Miller better than my Jackson, but the same is also tru the other way around. If you get a Jackson get the Shadow (HSL-100) and not the Halo. I am always getting sparks on the chin and down my collar with the Halo. I also have a fixed shade auto lens in my pancake. If you have to get into tight places or do a lot of fit up the ad's are great, not to mention the reduction in arc marks. I get flashed sometimes, but it's mainly just an annoyance. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
