Can anyone tell me how to weld rails.(equipment, heat, materials)
Reply:If I remember right I think we preheated to 125 degrees then welded it with 11018 rod.don't hold me too that it's been a while...like 15 yrs ago.If it's too . get an office jobLincoln wp225g7 Lincoln 250 idealarcFrankenstein O/A set-up Weld-tech  tig set-upLincoln sp 175 plus profax  arc gouger
Reply:Thermit weldingmore info:http://www.thermitwelding.demon.co.uk/profile.html
Reply:Varies with the application. For rail service, see the AWS and AAR standards. Thermite, submerged arc, and stick are all acceptable, but the consumables and process parameters are critical, as are the inspection, certification and training. If you are welding to the rail for other reasons, and there is no safety risk in the application, preheat 125 to 300 deg fahrenheight, manually weld with 7018. Use properly stored rod. The rail is sensitive to hydrogen cracking.
Reply:The rails in question have a travling bridge that remove solids from the bottom of basin, the bridge is 60 ft. in length and weighs 12 tons, it travles at around .5mph. There is no safty concerns, do you think preheating and 7018's would hold up to the weight?
