I know this sounds kinda like a noob question. But, what would be required to run a Miller Dialarc HFIn my house. There is presently nothing wired up in the garage other than 110v outlets.I know this is a huge welding machine and is more than I need but the deal is perfect for me right now.The owner said it's a 500amp welder.I'll include some pictures in a few minutes.I'm not a wiring genious. I just know how to weld, lol.
Reply:Here are the picsSays the range is 10-310 WTF? lol
Reply:WoahBaby!!!You 'Aint runnin that on 110...My brother is the Electrican..not me..But you will need at least a 100 amp breaker single phase......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:^lolI know it wouldn't run on 110v.I was more or less wondering what size breaker to use.But correct me if I am wrong. The amp range on that is 10-310amps not up to 500?

Reply:^Can you tell if it's a 240v or more?I completely gapped asking the seller.Just wondering if you can tell from your ubiquitous amounts of knowledge, lol
Reply:I can ask the seller to take those pics... I live 4 hours from him, lol
Reply:All I know is that my brother set the welder up running 220 Single Phase with a 100 amp breaker hard wired into the machine..What guage wire he used is beyond me.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:That machine will take a 100Amp breaker, and I have mine setup for 220 single phase using 6ga copper wire.  The machine is also a 310 amp machine max.  You need to know if the machine is a single phase or 3 phase machine.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:From the tag on the front it is single phase....... it will run from a 50 amp. breaker if needed......it will pull 90 amps at max draw........you will love the stick action of this machine.....the DC is very nice....as for the TIG side of it....I have never heard bad things...... how much $ is he asking for it and what comes with it?Mike
Reply:^It comes with the torch, collets, full sized tank and regulators, and watercooler and water cooled torch, power source, a bunch of gloves, a mask, bunch of filler. He want $1500 I think... I can't remember exactly. But around here it's hard to find used welders.
Reply:I couldn't even make out that it said Phase 1 on the plate.Someone on another forum was telling me I need a transformer? What are they refering to?

Reply:I used a 300 amp welder similar to that one.  At 200 amps it blew a 50 amp breaker continuously.   It should have a tag on it stating input power.  Increase that by 10% which will end up about 100 amps.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I have that welder here in the shop, regular Dialarc HF, not the 'P' model.   It won't do 500 amps.   Duty rating is 250 amps and max is 310 on DC. It will run on 200v, 230v, or 460v input, all single phase.   It doesn't run on 3-phase, only 2 hot connections inside.  Under the right side cover there is a power linking bar and you move the metal link connectors to different posts for different voltages.   I don't have mine hooked up here.  I got it from my old job and we had it hooked up to 460 there.  I linked it to 230, put a NEMA 14-50 combo 125v/250v plug on it- 4 wires:: 2 hots, ground and nuetral.   It needs the nuetral to run the contactor and the aux 110v outlets.  I hooked it up to my Bobcat 250 (10,000 watts, 44 amps @ 240v).   The Bobcat ran it all the way up to 310 amps stick welding in DC with 1/8" 7018.  Quite surprisingly, it didn't blow the 50 amp breaker on the Bobcat, or stall out the engine.  I fully expected it to blow the breaker as I kept turning up the amperage, but the Bobcat kept on going and the Dialarc kept on welding.  I didn't try tig welding with it hooked up to the Bobcat, I'm sure it would have blown the breaker.   That Dialarc is a very smooth stick welder , better than the Bobcat, about as good as the PowCon.Zap, under the lower cover--- On the left side there are the gas in/out connections, dual 110v aux power outlet (regular household NEMA 5-15's) and a circuit breaker that serves the aux power outlets and the contactor circuit.  Below that is the work cable lug connector. In the middle there is the spark gap thingee (for lack of a better name). To the right of that there is the contactor connector and the remote amptrol connector, both 'hubble's.On the far right are the water in/out connections, which mine doesn't use cause it has a cooler that connects to a lug power connector since we never used it on city water.  Below that is the electrode cable lug.I think that's all that's down there.Btw, does anyone know of a 240v single phase plug for use with greater than 50 amps?  All I have seen so far are 50 amp plugs.   I have 100 amps at the subpanel but I don't want to permanently wire the Dialarc to the subpanel cause I'd like to move it around once in a while without having to open the back of the panel and remove the power cord.  A plug would be nice.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:By the way, $1500 for that machine is an awful lot of money.   I don't think it's worth more than 3 digits.  I paid alot less than that for mine and it came with lotsa extra stuff.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I agree, $1,500 is a LOT for an older Dialarc HF.If you're buying it for stick welding, it's a great machine. If you're buying it for tig, there are many better choices available in the same price range. The Dialarc was a single phase machine.  You will constantly blow a 50A breaker.  A 70A may get you by if you're not in the high end constantly.  A 100A is the recommended breaker.Pretty much a bulletproof machine, but a power hog.  Yea, got one in the shop (standard dialarc 250).  Got it for stick so I didn't have to swap the leads on the Sync 250.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:I will say that $1500 for that machin is a bit much also.......how big are the tanks ?....and DR as for the NEMA rated plug I think ( I get in trouble with that sometimes) the plug are different to keep you from plugging in to the incorrect amp recep...like to 20 amp 120v plugs .....here is a link showing the different ones...I'm sure there are others....what are the twist locks "rated" at ?http://www.frentzandsons.com/Hardwar...nfiguratio.htmEDIT: 60 amp is the highest I found...and the twist lock info is in the above link...http://www.google.com/products?q=NEM...ptacle&show=ddLast edited by 84zmike; 03-22-2008 at 10:40 AM.
Reply:The twist-lock that was on the machine when we used it at work was rated 50 amps, 125v/250v, 4-wires, but we had it on a 460v line (I don't take responsibility for that one!).Thanks for the links. The plugs in the first link are mostly the ones I have here from the sub panel already, 5-20's, 6-20's, 6-30, and 6-50.The plugs in the second link are for 3-phase.I appreciate the effort though!MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Well...  I found what I was looking for in the Grainger catalog.   100-amp 4-wire 125v/250v single-phase combo plug and receptacle that would work for the Dialarc.   It's a Hubbel pin-and-sleeve connector set.   Looks kinda like an old 4-wire round trailer light plug on a boat trailer, but alot bigger.   Hold onto your hat when you read the price (and these prices are from my old 2002 catalog even!)....Receptacle, Hubbell p/n - HBL4100R12W, $306.25Connector Body, p/n - HBL4100C12W, ---$426.00Plug, Hubbell p/n, - HBL4100P12W, -------$332.25Inlet, Hubbell p/n, -  HBL4100B12W, ------$457.75(break for heart attack)....Total = $$$$$$$$$$$$$ 1522.25 !!!!!!!!!!!!  ....For a f-in' plug for a welding machine that didn't even cost me half that to buy in the first place!!!!  (another break for double heart attack)....Who in their right mind would pay that much for an electrical connector ??????Last edited by DesertRider33; 03-22-2008 at 02:56 PM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Sorry I haven't posted in a bit. I forgot my password.I haven't bought the machine yet. By the sounds of it, I am glad I didn't.I was mainly interested in it's TIG features. Since it's what I use most.If there are better TIG machine for that kind of money can you guys please recamend them to me?I do not use stick much if at all. 99% of my work is all automotive stuff for my friends and I. Things like exhausts, intake, turbo manifolds, cages, and the like. Having a good quality TIG is mainly what I am interested in.
