The welding engineering technology program i attend threw out about 2000lbs of lincoln .052" outershield wire and 100lbs of unopened E8018. All brand new still wrapped up in the shrink wrap on the skid. Nothing wrong with any of it just. Just scrapped it. If i only had a machine that could output 400 amps i would be all over it.Last edited by Go1lum; 05-02-2008 at 07:44 PM. --Gol'

Reply:With scrap running about $150 a ton you'd think they would sell it for scrap before trashing it. But then again I have been in programs where donated items could not be sold for any reason. The high school I graduated has an 81 firebird in the auto shop that the only way the can legally get rid of it is to give it back to GM.
Reply:thats unfortunate, the welding program i went through would KILL to get anything donated to them
Reply:colleges and programs like that tend to do that.... its already paid for in the budget so they no longer care about it... ... One of the things i have seen virturally thrown out like that is a high dollar powermatic cabnit saw. its crazy what people toss out
Reply:That kind  of waste just about makes me sick.
Reply:bandaid i dont know where your talking about, but most programs i know of can barely afford materials, gas, consumables etc...
Reply:the correctional facility ( voc ed dept )iwork at threw a dozen working welders in a dumpster when some new ones were ordered because they had to use a budget ..not allowed to donate or sell them..

Reply:that makes me absolutely sickpeople going to correctional facilities on taxpayers money for being morons are given better and newer equipment than what i and many other people pay for at junior colleges and vocational schools
Reply:I have become a professional begger when it comes to trying to get materials and supplies for my program!!!  The waste does make me sick!!!Jonesy

Oh yeah I have done any welding repair the city ever asked me to do in the last 29 years at NO charge to them.
Reply:That scenareo plays out all over the place..Back in the 70'S when I worked for my uncles Lincoln Mercury dealership I would go the the main distrubution warehouse Ford had in Framingham,Mass. and after I picked up what I was sent for..I'd drive around back to the dumpsters..One day I "picked up"2 300CI crankshafts..1 390 Crank..3 302 Cranks..Cams..Piston and  Rod sets..All sorts of stuff..I did not know what they fit at the time so they went to Dads shop where he built engines..He used all the stuff I got once it was identified..Throwing out perfectly good stuff after its "Shelf life" was over is nothing new.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Oh, shelf life items is another group of items I dearly miss not working for the government. I used to be able to get all of the Hysol aerospace structural epoxies, urathane paints, dye pentrent inspection kits, greases and various solvents that I could use because it was out of date or the can was rusting. I figured if I took it out of the lots set out to be turned in as hazardous waste I was saving the government money.
Reply:At the school I go to we go down to a local fab shop ( Southeast Fabricators) in tavares florida and jump in there scrap dumbster and start digging around. I would of killed to get the stuff yall threw awayAs said by CHENRY:you cant weld on a thingamajig like that. are you even certified to do thingamajig welding ? I once saw an improperly welded thingamajig fail and eleventy twelvoteen things got ballywhacked. I dont think i would risk it.
Reply:That 8018 would have wound up in my trunk along with as much of the outershield as I could carry. It might not be any good for a certified job but it's plenty good enough for a Hobby guy like me.I mean, they're throwin' it away, anyway, right? I'm just sayin'........
