Can anyone tell me what grade this would possibly be for this application?308,309,310,316???? I have a patch job tp do and would like to get the parent metal and filler metals to match. If it's too . get an office jobLincoln wp225g7 Lincoln 250 idealarcFrankenstein O/A set-up Weld-tech  tig set-upLincoln sp 175 plus profax  arc gouger
Reply:More than likely , it's type 304 stainless and the correct  patch probably 304 , & the filler metal=308  stainless .[SIZE="5"Yardbird"
Reply:I agree, the most common SS sheet would be type 304, and the standard filler for that would be type 308.The only SS pool I've ever seen was a fuel storage pool at a nuclear power plant, and you would swim in there for long.Last edited by pulser; 05-02-2008 at 07:17 PM.
Reply:Hmmm, if we're talking about a chlorinated swimming pool...I want pics!  In high school, during summers, I cleaned, repaired and built swimming pools.  I had a nice stainless pocket knife, and being young and dumb, thought that being stainless it wouldn't rust.  Let me tell ya, chlorine+water+stainless=RUST.Contact me for any metal polishing needs you may have, my avatar is a pic of a standard, painted fire axe that I ground, sanded polished and buffed to a mirror finish.
Reply:Better resistance to rusting can be had using 316L. Use 316 filler if that is the material you use. As to what it is made of, I don't know. Food supplies equipment is mostly all 316, but I have no idea of whirlpools and the like. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:a?D?inless in the resturant business is 304, sometimes you will see 316 but it is not the norm. 90% of the stainless you see is 304. 316 has molydenium which makes it more corrosion resistant.Use 308 filler for 304 and 316filler for 316 . Usually used in  marine applications. You can have a sample analized if you can afford it. Many welding labs and inspection businesses have a hand held tool that can tell you if the stainless is 304 or 316. There is a chemical test you can do also.If you just use 316 filler you will be covered. If it is for a chemical process tank or nuclear plant tank just check the building plan specs.309 is used to join steel to stainless.310 used to be used as a buttering pass with 312 before 309 was available.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 05-03-2008 at 08:00 PM.
Reply:Molybdenum Spot Test will tell you if its 304 or 316.In Australia I think a test kit costs about $200.00 AU and it has a shelf life (1 year I think...)One of our Stainless suppliers (Dalsteel) stock it.For a swimming pool over here my first guess would be 316. So 316 filler.More info :http://www.azom.com/details.asp?ArticleID=1234A good guess is better than a bad measurement
Reply:thanks for all the info guys I am going over to quote the job tomorrow I will try and take a camara with me so as I can take some pics.It is a clorine type swimming pool from what was described to me.Thanks again guys...DennyIf it's too . get an office jobLincoln wp225g7 Lincoln 250 idealarcFrankenstein O/A set-up Weld-tech  tig set-upLincoln sp 175 plus profax  arc gouger
Reply:Stainless steel in chlorine enviroments can result in Intergranular Stress Corrosion Cracking (IGSCC or SCC) and Oxygen Starvation Pitting Corrosion.
