I got a lincoln pro core 100 about a year ago.  I haven't used it much.  The problem i have is that the welds look like **** and I get alot of splater.  This is the gasless model.  Can somone give me some advise?  If this is not a good welder, whould you recommand the miller 180?
Reply:A picture is very helpful, go fire it up and we can help.Me!
Reply:Splatter, smoke, slag, that's what I got when I had one. It will make a weld bead and if layed down well, it can be cleaned up after the fact. You just have to be a really good cleaner-upper!If you have 230VAC available, well, that is a better power source for welding from a heavier machine...like a 180 amp unit.City of L.A. Reply:Immediately put it in a box and ship it to me!  Flux-core welders take a bit of practice and are messy!John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:yea I plan on firing it up this week sometime to get some pictures up.  Well if I planned to buy another machine.  Would you buy a tig/stick machine or a better mig machine.  which do you guys use more?
Reply:That would depend on what you weld most?Thickness and type?Location?Personally I would keep my MIG if I could only have one.  I do a lot of shop work and the MIG is the best for the job.  A lot of others go stick only most of the time on construction sites and mobile.Me!
Reply:This is going to be around the house type of stuff.   I am unsure how thick of metal i will do.. I know I won't be going any thicker than 5/16 (I hope).

Reply:Also, make sure it IS flux-core wire you are using - if you put solid in there and try welding with it you'll get quite the mess indeed!!Good luck Have a Jeep Cherokee?  Click Here!
Reply:ok if it doesn't say on the wire spoll.  how can i see if it is flux core.. i know it is a noobish question.

Reply:And then there is always the polarity question.......
Reply:True, though I would usually expect that to not be changed from default on a "gasless" welder, but that should always be checked, good point.
Reply:True that. I missed that point. bedtime.......
Reply:You guys are some great advise givers.  I am hopeing to fire it up today when I get up and I will post pic/ comments on the projects I do.

Reply:Well I got to hook my welder up today.  I am having a problem with keeping the weld going.    not sure if i have enough power going to it.  but i will get to doing some more tomorrow.  I have to cut it short.. spent most of the day redoing something to my truck.. I hate not doing stuff right the first time kinda pisses me off hehe.
Reply:Zipity, Welcome to the board.  I have a welding business about 40 miles west of you on the state line, and have alot of Family and friends over in Albany.  I'm usually over there quite often.  It's good to see some locals on the forum.  Fluxcore is messy and takes some practice to get the hang of.  "IF" you were going to buy a new welder It would depend on what kind of projects you want to do, and how much money you want to spend.  My personal opinion is that for the average hobby welder a good 180 amp mig is probably the most versatile, and that comes from a guy who runs stick 95% of the time.  If you could post some pics it would make it quite a bit easier for us to offer some correct advice.  If all else fails let me know and I'll be glad to stop by next time I'm in Albany, and give you some pointers.  ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Now thats a deal you can't refuse..Good man Jackson......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:kewl ty.. I will get some pictures up sometime this week..  need to try at actually getting a bead down.   I might have to take you up on that and I can provide a case of beer. :P
