i have a ss soap dish to braze a small bracket to- not looking for much. can i braze with same stuff i use for brazing ms?
Reply:The same stuff as mild steel should work.  You could use silver braze.  I like to use silicon bronze on stainless.  It is known by the trade name "Everdue".  I use it to TIG braze, I don't know how good it would be for torch brazing.  The silver braze alloy would work with a gas torch.
Reply:this is the dish and little post the owner asked me to fix. looks like he tried to with electricians circuitboard soldering iron. it looks like stamped stainless but right where the post broke off is a scratch that looks brassy color. Attached Images
Reply:obewanwhat exactly is tig brazing-is it using low heat tig to warm  the metal to the brazing rods meltpoint for capillary flow without melting base metal?
Reply:We often use a 2 part epoxy resin to glue stainless components together.Very strong and could well be suitable for your application. It is specifically for stainless so it is possibly different to standard Araldite or Super glue.A good guess is better than a bad measurement
Reply:Silver solder would probably work well. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:Nickel bronze brazing rods will do it well, silver solder also. If you need the extra strength of the nickel brazing rods, I actually buy them at Home Depot. They are sold by Bernzomatic, are the short rods, 12" long, and have a blue flux coating rather than a white coating on the regular brazing rods. These rods give very good strength, and good bond. They also work well on cast iron, and gears that have lost a tooth. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:With brass showing through are we sure it's stainless and not chrome plating?
Reply:Yes.  TIG brazing is like any other braze process except the heat source is a TIG torch.  A little extra care is required to not melt the base metal.  If the melt point of the braze filler is low enough, it is usually not a problem.  Some of the nickel and gold braze alloys melt around 2000F and would be more tough to do.  For some applications, it might not matter to have a small amount of base metal melting, but with stainless you for sure do not want to alloy in melted copper or you will have cracking problems.
Reply:That dish might be chromed brass. I would go the silver solder route myself.
Reply:i saw that brass in the scratch and feel it is plated. isnt brazing lower heat than silversolder? i think the higher the  heat  the more plating will get cooked..??
Reply:many thanks to all those who replied..
