I'm thinking of buying a spool gun. I'tll need to be able to run off of a Miller xmt. I've used them a few times, rather awkward feeling. But I gather it's the most practical quick set up, economical, trouble free way to go. I've noticed on millers website that they have some that have the wires coming out of the bottom of handle. That sounds nicer to me as of balance and manueverability. However the ones w/ wire and hose coming out of back end cost more. They also handle broader range of wire. Anyone used both or either? Any comments at all?
Reply:I have used/own 4 different designs. I really like my Miller 3035 but it is lighter duty than some others like the HTP/Snap on and i think Lincoln model which have the wires out the back. The Profax and all its variants and there are alot of them is heavier duty as well as the bigger Miller models are good also. It all depends how much you are going to use it and how thick of alum you are going to weld for how much time for the duty cycle...Bobhttp://www.weldmart.com/AEC%20SPOOL%20GUN%20MASTER.htmBob WrightSalem, Ohio Birthplace of the Silver & Deming Drillhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/1999 Miller MM185 w/ Miller 185 Spoolmate spoolgun
Reply:We install the Miller 30A on virtually any brand of CV capable power source. I've seen and used other brands and none even come close to comparing with the 30A .The 30A is hands down the best spoolgun in the market today PERIOD!

Reply:I have to say 30A is the way to go. It's a natural matchup (14 pin connect compatibility and similar power ratings) with the XMT as long as you're talking about a XMT CC/CV. You will need a Miller weld controller, such as the WC-24, to complete the connection.ScottMiller XMT 350 CC/CV w/gas solenoid opt.Miller S-22A wirefeederBernard 400A "Q" gunMiller Spoolmatic 30A / WC-24C-K 200A torch/gas lensWeldcraft WC-18 watercooled torchHypertherm Powermax 30Victor O/A

Reply:I like metalmasters thoughts. But, versatility + economically, it sounds like 30a the answer. And thank you Dmaxter on the harsh, but true news of the WC-24 ( is'nt there a cheaper way to get around that)? Donk, the cobramatic to me is my favored way too. I worked at a fence shop that had one w/ a intervec when the 350 came out. It was great, to much to maintain in the field though. |
