Hi, i am an apprentice welder fabricator in rotherham abnd i aspire to become a coded welder.I was just wondering how would i go about becoming a coded welder and is there any money to be made in it?
Reply:What kind of code are you talking about?I'm from New Zealand where we break it all down are you into API Line pipe or stainless dairy structural steel??First of all find a WPS welding procedure specifactions sheet to describe the process you want to weld make up your own dummy test and do that a few time, then you can approach a certifier who well come and watch you do a join/t joint etcThats how it works in this country, there is slightly more money in it but be prepared to travel.....
Reply:Where abouts in n.z. bro?

Reply:There could be as many 10,000 Codes.   Decide what you want to do and then practice to take the test.   John GaultSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:i have just been set on with a specialised T.I.G welder and he was going on about putting me in for the test in about 6 months or so, he is really good and seems to have made a name for himself but failing this would it be easy to find work? im not actually sure about all the codes etc
Reply:Hi JGST i'm in Hastings you?
Reply:He's working on ANOTHER dairy factory krum, Synlait, bloody tin tappers Birchy1990,  it should take around one month for you to get your head around tig and pass a test (conservatively), six months seems a very long time.  Over this way (NZ and Aussie) tig welders are on the pig's back if they want at the moment  I'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
Reply:Birchy1990, I'm a CWI and testing you to any specific code is not a problem.  The issue is what good it will it do you.  If this is for a potential job, do your homework and test for what the job will require.  If you are just hoping to put "Certified Welder" on your resume, be careful.  I've certified plenty of guys for one thing who later were back to fail the more difficult joints required for the work the job they landed. They were certified though...Good luck!
Reply:i was told by a teacher of mine, its better to be qualified than certified.  A cert doesnt prove much, it proves that you can pass a test, once, in ideal conditions.
Reply:Also remember that some certifications are good only at the employer that had you take the test.  It doesn't follow you to the next job and isn't even any good for "moonlighting" jobs in the evening.
Reply:I'm in a trade school for welding, I have been persuaded to join the Pipe Fitters Union.. Care to join?I heard they make some serious $$$.*insert welding gibberish here*                    Mandy
