Gus as some of you know I recently purchased a new Lincoln GXT, and since I was planning to hook my hi-freq box into it for portable AC tig, I was told I needed to install a kit from Lincoln called an R/F bypass kit.  Supposedly it is supposed to stop the hi-frequency from feeding back into the machine and ruing the boards.  Well I have been thinking about it, and now I'm wondering just how this "kit" works.  It's nothing more than a small box that mounts inside the welder with wires that hook to the two output studs, and another that hooks to the ground (frame) of the machine.  Well now I'm wondering what exactly it might do to the computer in my truck since the machine is grounded to the truck frame.  could the hi-freq feedback into my ECM?  Is this a concern or something to not worry about.  I have run hi-freq boxes in the past, but they were on trailer mounted machines.  When i asked my LWS they had no idea either.  Just thought I would ask here and see what any of you guys might know.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:I have no idea..Next contestant......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I would think a ground is to keep the welder from trying to find a ground and causing an arc thru the truck or some body
Reply:If I remember right, its a 1 mfd capacitor.  I put one in my G7 so I could AC tig.  Mine just went from + to - on the inside of the machine on the back of the output terminals.  I would be sure to use it.  I would have to take the cover off to be sure.  I only paid a few dollars from lincoln.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:One of the worst mistakes i ever made was not grounding a generator that was on the back of my flatbed truck and i was working in the field. My truck was parked on a lawn with wet grass. i was early in the morning. They say you are supposed to take a wire from the frame of the generator to a ground rod and stick it in the ground. I thought it was too much trouble. The generator was sitting on a plywood bed.i got shocked very bad and the bad thing also was i was working alone. If I needed help I could have been dead.HF can affect a computer up to 60 feet away. That is what it says in my instruction book for my Miller welder. I would ground every thing. i would install that box Lincoln recommends too.My understanding of electrical ( AC) is limited.I go by all of the instructions in my welding instruction book as far as HF is concerned.Although if HF is bad for the health it would seem scientists should study the health of people doing welding. Especially TIG.
Reply:I have a old miller tig welder in my shop that has a ground wire to hook up to a grounding rod .Well never hooked it up and was welding one day and forgot to hook the dirt to the table as we all do sometimes and it was welding with out it . It went thru my grinder and my cell phone that was plug in to the wall, smoked them
Reply:I have the kit installed.  We put it on at my LWS a day or two ago.  I was just curious about whether or not I should worry about it having any effect on my truck's ECM since the welder is "grounded" to the frame of the truck.  I'm gonna call Lincoln tomorrow and talk to the tech guys and see what they say just for curiosity sake.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:I might add, that I have never heard of actually hooking a portable welder to an earth ground.  My understanding was that ground stud was to attach to the truck frame.  I guess I will go back and reread the owners manual to be sure, but it seems counter/productive to have to drive a ground rod everytime you pull up to a job.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:i have a small generator that i use for running a grinder, sawzall, electric impact etc when im too far from the garage.  I always drive a stake in the ground, electricity is not something to toy with (i learn the hard way)Im not sure about a generator on a pickup, but it couldnt hurt to do it anyway.  If it were me id take the 30 seconds and do it.

Reply:lucky, dont need to deal with HF problem yet ,unless I borrowed it from someone... but its nice to know.Unit in my fab shop dept:my good hand and team that trust me...A lone welder make art... a village full of welder make Miracles...
Reply:I read about the ground rod for portable welders years ago. I have never used one and I have never heard or seen anyone use one. Don't know of anyone being shocked either but it could probably occur under the right conditions. The only time I have ever been shocked was when welding in the rain and then only when breaking the arc and becoming the path from the electrode to ground. A pair of plastic or rubber gloves solves that problem if you just have to weld when raining.

Reply:OK, I talked to Lincoln today, and the short answer is "no"  it will not harm an auto's ECM.  If the truck frame was actually carrying welding current from the machine to the Hi-freq box then it is possible, but as it is the problem is not a concern.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Thank you !David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
