Can anyone tell me if this is feasible? We have a couple of rotary vane vacum pumps that are worn on the inside dia. Other wise they would be good. they are worn from the fiberglass vanes that rotate during the pumping process. Pumps are HEAVY cast iron. Inside dimension approx. 6.780 inches x 6.00 inches long. Very rough. Need to bore the I.D. to smooth it out, but not enough material for a good cut. The I.D. is through so it could be reached from both ends. Is this large enough to weld a build up for reborig afterwards. Located in SoWest Mt. so need some one around the area. Other thought is to sleeve it, but pipe or tubing of that size is not available without a LOT of machining. Sure appreciate any suggestions. ThanxDisarco
Reply:well, after welding it's going to need machiced but if youre comfortable weldind cast and you know if its cast steel or cast iron there would be a little less machicing by welding.it hard to say without getting my hands on it though. even sleeving will some welding to lock the sleeve in place. it just depend on how much there is to work with to say what i'd do.
Reply:Agreed tresi..I'd put a steel sleeve in itYou could shrink it in with .010 shrink and just forget about it after...Maybe add a dutchman or 3..No welding required.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Sleeve it with a steel sleeve and a shrink fit. Finish ream or bore as needed.Of course you have to have enough original 'meat' left to bore out for the sleeve and to properly support the sleeve after it's all shrunk together.
Reply:Isn't the pump cavity an eccentric shape?
Reply:I know the realy large ones are, we resurfaced some 300 horsepower ones a few yeares ago.major PITA..............insert thoughtful quote from someone else2000 Thermal Arc 300GTSW 3.5 hours1946 Monarch 20 x 54 Lathe1998 Supermax 10x54 Mill2004 Haco Atlantic 1/2" Capacity Lasernot mine but i get to play with it
Reply:I'm sure it's cast steel and no the cavity isn't eccentric, the rotor is off center. From what you guys say I think it would be alot simpler to sleeve it. BUT trying to find a piece of pipe or tubing that is 7.0 OD with about a 1/2 or 3/8 wall is another problem. Just trying to keep from boring out solid stock. Keep em coming, you guys have been a big help.Disarco
Reply:The tubing should not be that hard to find. I can get it in most any size I need, or at least close to it.I agree. Sleeving would be the way to go.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:One more vote for a sleeveYup

Reply:Wow again, thanx for the info, making it easier all the time. I'll go for the DOM or engine sleeve. It would be backed up with plenty of meat and would be replaceable next time.Disarco
Reply:How much and what size tubing will you need???We probably have some I can send to you just for the shipping..No guarantees but there is a lotta stock where I work.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:standard wall(sched 40 ) or heavy wall 6" steel pipe will have an OD of 6.625"..standard wall thickness is .280 ", not sure how much thicker the heavy wall is-- build up the outside with weld and machine it to what you need....?
Reply:Rebuilt may of these personally. Gast, Busch, Edwards, Leybold, Welch and others I can't remember at the moment. Little ones up to big huge vactor truck ones. Flamespray is fastest, and cheapest without double machining it. Save yourself the problems down the road too.But what do I know... it's only experience....
