i want to fabricate my first deisel fuel tank.  i have a mig welder and a stick welder, i want to build the tank out of ten guage steel and have 3 baffles.  should i stick or mig the tank?  any advice would be great.   the tank will be rectangular  and 123 gallons for a farm truck.   thanks in advance
Reply:Since it's a new tank then Mig is what I vote for..Fast and effective!Be sure to post pics......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:10 gauge = 0.134",  not too darn thin for stick, but still probably easier with MIG.Do you use 100% CO2 on the MIG, cause 75% Argon / 25% CO2 runs cooler with less spatter.
Reply:The process to use is the one that you are the most proficient at.  If you are better at stick then use stick.   If it's mig then use mig  If it is clean steel then mig would be my choice, but it all depends on your skill level.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:I would build it with mig myself. If it's a transfer tank for fueling equipment, I would add a drain at the bottom on one side so you can drain/ flush the tank if you ever get water in the tank.Haveing spent at lot of time moving diesel to fuel equipment heres a couple of suggestions. Get a filter that removes water and hook it up to the pump. It's cheap insurance againts getting water in the equipment and posibly blowing an injector. I'd go with one of the 2" vent caps that they sell at TS as the fill cap. It will vent as you pump with out haveing to leave the fill open. I find one of the electronic/ manual fuel meters to be a graet help in keeping tract of how much fuel is left in the tank. A dip rod will work, but I can never keep them clean most of the time.
Reply:Mako463,Whatever you decide, be sure to leak test before you put fuel in it; rework over fuel oil is no fun.Good Luck
Reply:thanks guys,   1 more?    should i weld both sides that i can   or is that overkill?
Reply:That thin you should have no problems just doing the outside. I would practice and dial in the settings before doing the tank.  Also DON'T test with fuel!  If you have a leak you will have problem fixing it.Me!
Reply:test with soap and water on the outside and about 4psi on the inside.
