Looking to go mobile with my Lincoln PT-225... I'm guessing 6kW peak, 4-5kW continuous would be enough. Basically just to run the welder, and maybe some lighting which isn't much. I'd prefer diesel, only because I like the smell of it.. Any suggestions on where to get JUST a generator? (and suggestions for good generators, things to stay away from..) Everything I seem to find online has a welder built into it. I've got a mig and stick/tig welder... just want to go mobile with them. Thanks in advance!Last edited by z0diac; 08-06-2008 at 12:44 AM."A winner isn't someone who doesn't lose, a winner is someone who doesn't quit."

Reply:Ackk!! Well I know it won't draw 40amps - or at least, it'll work on a 30A line as right now I'm using my dryer outlet to power it. But then again I've never really had it turned all the way up to 225A output. Stick I'm using anywhere from 80-125A, and TIG max of about 175A output. I did put it up to 225A when I first got it jut to see, and it tripped the circuit on the house panel for the dryer line. 'Probably best to get at least a 10kW peak generator just to be sure."A winner isn't someone who doesn't lose, a winner is someone who doesn't quit."

Reply:[QUOTE=z0diac;205089]I'm not looking to buy right now, but maybe in the fall. My buddy works for Syncrude oil up in the Alberta oil sands and said there's a huge demand for people with their own portable rigs. 'Figured I've got most of the gear already, just need an old truck to throw it on and portable power. Even around town here.. my buddy's part of his family's construction business and wanted me to go to a place to do up some minor stuff.QUOTE]If you are headding out to the oil fields, you can buy all new gear, get a chopper, you will have it paid off fast. A contractor that we use out of Edmonton pays their guys $50 per hour for providing their truck and welder, That is not including the hourly rate for labor. Lucky guys, I have thought about it, but I would only want to be there in the summer time.
Reply:If you're going to spend the bucks for a generator of that size might as well get the welder. Then if the box blows on you there is still an option for getting the job done. A genset that size will most likely take up just as much space and weigh just as much. The owners manuals on my inverter machines are pretty adamant about not getting them wet. My engine drives get drowned regularly and don't seem to mind. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:If you want a decidated generator the Briggs and Stratton at Home depot exl8000 is a good choice has a Daihutsu (briggs vangard engine) with oil filter 8K continous power 12.5 starting..All for $999 someplaces they are charing $1200 at some HD locations, or cheaper for a NIB on ebay for AROUND $800 shipped. |
