I Have to hang a 13'x6' gate. I've got a set of those heavy duty square hinges. I'm wondering, is it better to put the hinges directly at the top and the bottom or should I bring them in a foot or so. Which way gives more support? It's a pretty heavy gate.solderer?

Reply:You may have to shim the bottom hinge out an eighth to allow for down flex in the gate so weld the top of the top hinge first and check it. This way you can pry the bottom out and not break the weld and still get a shim piece in. Also I put the hinges with both males up then weld a little piece on the post that sticks over the top of one hinge so people cant lift it off. This way if the gate is ever damaged you just cut the little piece off to take it to the shop instead of having to cut the hinge. Attached Images
Reply:On this gate there was no post to weld a tab to so I welded a tab that was bent to go up and over the top part of the hinge. That way a person could not lift it off but I can take a torch and cut the tab if the gate is damaged and I need to take it to the shop for repairs. You can see the piece of metal on the top hinge. |
