Anyone have any luck getting their wives to weld with them? I asked my wife If I bought her a helmet of her choosing if she weld with me, she sure just to try it..thought it would be fun to have a partner in welding close to home, and we can take turns prepping metal or other chorses that make a make a small job, a chore by yourself..I want to make sure since my wifes father never taught her much about fixing stuff, to learn in case something ever happens she will know how to do simple stuff most ladies rely on their husbands to do..Example My Sisters Husband died at age 36 as a Law enfocrcement Officer on duty 2 weeks ago, and left her not even being able to put cholorine tablets in the septic tank or how to use a ladder.Ill get her a helmet tommorow and she what she can do..Ill post some pics of us "couple welding" similar I guess kinda like "couples skating" (yeah Im corny)...Once we get our 30x40 or maybe 30x50 shop built, each family member will have their "own area" to do as they wish such as trains for the kids, or whatever they wanna do, but figure it will be good family time.Last edited by goodoleboy; 08-13-2008 at 03:56 AM.
Reply:Well welding in this case might be a hobby. If you wife is anything like the woman I know and the one I am married too... She might not have an interst. If she doesn't I wouldn't force the issue. If she is interested then yes.But as a service to men all over. As a hobby for some... Its a good way to get out of the house and out of each others hair. Would you learn quiliting or crafts? As far as being handy around the house... Yes that is a great thing to teach.

As for quilting id proably not do it, but she did teach me how to sew., and I do see your point but shes a tomboy also.

Reply:My hubby and I both weld. I have also been known to rebuild carberators, proprely hang pictures using a stud sensor, do various automotive maintenance, put cabinets and bike stands together, help rebuild toilets, etc. My sister, on the other hand, it really intimidated by the idea of welding. She thinks that I am very brave for learning how to weld.

I would think that it would kill all the beneficial bacteria and allow solids to build up. Or is "septic tank" a code name for the swimming pool?

Reply:I've taught several of the neighborhood kids the basics, but so far the woman has no interest. Never really thought about actually asking her lol! I just may...That's a beautiful piece, Broccoli! Have a Jeep Cherokee? Click Here!

Reply:Any time I get a big job that needs to be done in too short a period of time my wife is ready willing and able to help out. Well, anything but torch work. She hates the torch. She is quite good with the wire and I don't have to check her welds, but she's done this for years now.
Reply:I got to tell ya broc, that doesn't look much like a desert but it is a nice fire "pit". Looks pretty cool.Tim Beeker.

Reply:I showed her how to fish, last week she goes out and buys her third rod "this one is for musky this fall" I'm told. I showed her how to shoot, now she has her own 1911 and a M1.We are looking at buying a place and it has a barn and a couple buildings that would make a great shop. Now she wants to weld so she can make yard art.Am I going to have to take up needlepoint if I want a hobby I can do to get away? Yup
Reply:My wife wants to learn to do things in the garage, she came out and tried welding a month or so back when I got my new helmet (she was the first to use it). She wants to help me on my car (88/89 mustang, but has not yet). I would not have a problem learnign knitting or what ever if she really enjoyed it and wanted me to be part of it. I even tried to be part of her scrap booking (crap booking as I call it) but she lost interest in that before I got involved. -DanOwnerDW Metalworks LLCMiller Trailblazer 302Miller 8RC FeederMiller Passport PlusMiller Dynasty 200 DX W/Coolmate 1Hobart Handler 135Hypertherm PowerMAX 30Smith O/A Torch SetPlus much much moreWow, you guys are lucky. Better take care of the women. My wife has no interest welding, metal fab, cars or guns. She is into crossstitching.
Reply:Im not married but close i must admit. Im holding out for dear life.I'd have to say this though, the hardest thing for me is watching her really act like she wants to but then losing interest in a month and putting down all the expensive stuff you just bought. But you just have to stomach it though. After all welding and women in this case is like Archery which was what I did. Its kind of a toss of a coin if they like it or not. Welding would probably be way worse then archery also.My girlfriend acts like she wants to weld. But this time im doing it a little different then jumping out immediatly and getting her that $1000 bow. Im just kind of going along and waiting untill she really makes a big point of wanting to do it.Maybe then atleast I might get two or three months. But you never know.
Reply:If they want to do it have them buy the tools. I don't make enough to support my own hobbies. In all fairness do not count the women out. After all welding and women both start with W. As men, we can at least provide the opportunity for women to pick up the reigns and see which way the wagon rolls. Could be very interesting ride indeed.
Reply:" As men, we can at least provide the opportunity for women to pick up the reigns and see which way the wagon rolls."That couldn't be better said.
Reply:She will help me with anything but lifting heavy things, and welding. Cutting, grinding, layout, painting she all helps with. One day she will come arround and start welding, after all she's my 4-H welding co-leader. Having her know what (most) tools are really helps when it is time to buy new gear though, but that also has bit me in azz.
Reply:If you mean like going outside,no way. Does the welding lead got to be so heavy? if 1 bb of spatter hit her it would end with a trip to a burn center. Basically if it more dangerous than making a trip to WalMart WITHOUT the cell phone it isn't going to happen.
Reply:Sent my wife the link to the welder chic, this is her response "That's sweet teach me to weld"Where this will end up is anybodys guess but its a start in the right direction. -DanOwnerDW Metalworks LLCMiller Trailblazer 302Miller 8RC FeederMiller Passport PlusMiller Dynasty 200 DX W/Coolmate 1Hobart Handler 135Hypertherm PowerMAX 30Smith O/A Torch SetPlus much much more

Reply:Originally Posted by Craig in DenverWell, I'm sorry to voice my opinion here; BUT. The only reason an unmarried woman will show any interest in the garage (or anything else you do) is to get you married. Then she will sit in the house and complain that you're in the garage. I have a low opinion of women and a long list of unhappy, married friends. Sure, there are some soul mates, but they are more a myth than reality. Men make things (first the wheel, then the International Space Station), women b!tch about us being in the garage. Rant off; OK maybe not.

Reply:Anyone who has had the "benefit" of a wife organizing your shop when you were out of town knows better then to let them near a welder! I tell mine to stay 10 feet away or static electricity might zap em.Example -my wife put all my circular sawblades in the cabinet under my saw- I spent two days looking for them over in my magazene storage boxes where I thought I put them a couple months ago.

Reply:Well, if your wife is like so many other women and has the strange desire to be surrounded by aestheticaly pleasing things, she could weld to make sculptures and such. What could be more fulfilling than being surrounded byu beautiful things you made yourself? |
