I'm curious. I have a roll of L-56 Super Arc but no gas bottle yet. What would be the result of running the bare wire with no gas?I realize it's not intended to be used that way but has anyone tried it?Lincoln PowerMig 180cVictor O/ABandaids and aspirinI don't know what I don't know!?
Reply:I do it all the time. Mainly because SOMEONE forgets to turn the bottle on. As to what it does, go ahead and try it on a practice piece just to see what it does. Can you say "Swiss Cheese"?? That is what it will look like. A weld with zero strength and appearance quality. Shielding gas must be used with solid wire. There is no way around it.QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS

Reply:Look at this thread: http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=23220The pictures in the first post of that thread shows what happens when you run solid wire with no shielding gas. Like DDA52 said, there is nothing good about welds made with no shielding.Visit Tensaiteki.com

Reply:Try it, so you'll know when you forget to turn on the bottle. I'm in TIG class, someone unhooked the argon. I knew within 10 minutes that something was wrong. Reply:ROTFLMAO@Go1lum and boy am I glad you were kidding Craig. That scenario for me with mig or tig is an instantaneous awwww $hit. My business partner used to be real bad about walking by and turning the gas off on the mig if I wasn't welding with it at that particular moment (he didn't want to lose any gas to a leak even though every bottle change got the soapy water treatment on every connection) and then I would have to get out the grinder. I was nice for awhile, then I made him grind one out and informed him the next time he did it he was getting an enema with a 4 1/2 inch grinder. He doesn't do it anymore, now if I could just keep him off the O/A bottles. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
