need help with rheostat

I need to repair or replace an old ohmite rheostat off of my airco 200 amp hornet special dc welder. Has anyone here ever repaired a burnt out piece on a rheostat before? I was told that the material was probably nichrome. Can this material be repaired by soldering or welding?
Reply:Can you post a picture of the rheostat, and the machine too? Without seeing it, I would think it easier to find another rheostat than to fix yours, assuming it's like most of the Ohmite models I've known. The nichrome wire could probably be silver brazed with success if it were free of the supporting ceramic, but while in place, it might not be easy without damaging something else including the ceramic..Do you know the size, capacity or model number from the rheostat?

Reply:To Oldiron2 and denrep, thanks for responding to my post. I'm not able to post pics today. The rheostat is an old ohmite, spec # 39034C, 5 ohms, max amps 9.2, min amps 3.7x, it is about 5" o.d. at the windings. And I was looking at the possibility of repairing the nichrome band still in place, which would be the concern for damaging the rheostat from the heat.
