I have a project where I am forming and then welding round stainless steel wire together. The wire diameter is 5/16 and 5/8.The drawing calls for fillet welds completely around.  There is a symbol that I am not familiar with.   on the weld description line there is Z2.What does the Z2 mean?
Reply:O In the corner  where the arrow bends means weld all around.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I've never heard of that.  Is there anything in the Notes section about it?  You may have to contact the engineer or designer and ask them what it is.  It's better to ask beforehand than to mess something up by assuming or guessing.
Reply:z is leg length under iso 2553
Reply:The Z2 number is the outdated Brittish system. it has been superseded. You can call the AWS and have them fax you the list of brazing and soldering symbols or go online and buy them for $149.00 !!!I would call the people wanting the project done and ask them for up to date info, or call the AWS and see if they will give you a list of the 60 or so symbols.Sounds Brittish doesn't it.I remember some guy on this forum asking all about this before and I looked up a website where you can buy the rings already made and welded. The person asking about them was going to use them for a seal around a combustion chamber Ibelieve. A fillet weld around a 5/16 wire! - wow.Silver solder??Last edited by Donald Branscom; 09-13-2008 at 09:28 PM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:Or you could just use google http://www.roymech.co.uk/Useful_Tables/Drawing/Weld.html, learn to spell 'British', accept that the rest of the world has gone metric and that various different standards are in use

Reply:What is a "British" anyway? maybe someone that makes crappy cars? JUST kidding.Tim Beeker.
Reply:That'll teach me to be more specific than was needed when 'a different designation for leg length' would've sufficed. Yeah, it's been revised billions of times. My copy is a 1992 revision FWIWWe learnt a while ago that car manufacture is best left to the Germans, maybe it's time you guys saw the light
