anybody have an idea what type of metal a carburator is made of? I have a carb off of a 1946 jeep with a broken base.
Reply:It's usually called 'pot metal' but is probably something called" Zamak" both were used for auto parts---main composition is zinc with just about anything else added to the composition....melting point somewhere around 786*  Try  http://www.muggyweld.com/potmetal.html   I know nothing about it,but they seem to know how to repair the stuff.Hope that helps...My 46 Jeep is missing the motor or I'd sell you another. I should add...It's entirely possible that the carb body is made of aluminum too.Last edited by mudbugone; 09-19-2008 at 08:49 PM.
Reply:thanks! I'll check it out.
Reply:The base was usually cast iron, and the main body zinc.Remember those hi-tech carb names, like: visi-flow, mono-jet...?My favorite: WCFB, White Cast Four Barrel!Good Luck
Reply:Many carbs are a zinc alloy or aluminium denrep is correct that there were many cast iron based carbs.
Reply:To answer the question you didn't ask, the zinc castings can be best repaired by 'soldering' with a special alloy , usually if not always containing Cadmium. My old Allstate catalog lists product # 53 as a torch applied "Alloy For Zinc Base Castings" and show it having a working temperature of 700*F, a 28,000 psi tensile strength and good color match and corrosion resistance. Their # 53 flux is required. The zinc melts and vaporizes at a very low temperature ( mp 420, bp 908*C ) so welding is unsuitable for it.
Reply:thanks for the replies!
