is there a industry standed for welding supplies and is it different if welding ss or alum then steel. Thanks   matt
Reply:I mean on how much to charge.
Reply:I include it in the labor rate unless its a big job.  The last big job I did required 8018.  I billed em for it at my cost.  I used 100 lbs.  I just plain charge more for aluminum.  They are paying for skill and fancy equipment......Never used 100 lbs aluminum  2 or 3 lbs of 7018 or bare wire, I don't worry about.  Piece work, I find what ever will weld the fastest (dualshield, Metal core.....)  If I can beat the clock (piece rate) using the more expensive stuff, I figure out if its worth it to me.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:My rate was $60 hr for Arc, $67 hr for Mig (either steel or aluminum)  I provide the supplies.  Any specialty rods I charged by the rod.   Using a scale I'd weigh the rods until I got 1 lb, counted them, devided what I paid per lb, then doubled that figure.
Reply:thanks that is helpfull. I do a lot of repair work  on ss and alum but will not use more then a 1/2 pound of wire. but at the same time i am trying pay for two new machines with some of my welding supply charge.  again thanks   matt
Reply:I charge for what I use, unless it is a "5 minute" job.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Gee I see your from Taxachusetts.I see you have a service truck! Is the service to be provided an on road or in shop service? If on road its a common practice to have an on call service charge to cover cost to and from job  site. Cost! cost of labor to, while at, and return to shop. Charge for materialscan be an estimate or actuals! Such as welding rods used, welding gas, and other consumables used in the job.Ie for us if on road there is a $45 service charge, cost of labor, and materials  2rods & welding gas. For a 5 minute on the road they may pay upwards of $90 or more. Whereas a shop charge for same item could be 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of road call charge. And oh yeah don't forget that Taxachusetts tax.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:Just charge for time and materials. Fair to both parties. That way the client can check the price of materials if they want to, and they can track your hours you work.If you go to the job in a mobile rig you charge starting when you leave your shop and when you return to your shop. Forget piecework it is a ripp off.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:I get a 3hr min on road jobs, and most all of my jobs are road jobs. An excavator bucket crack uses alot of wire, where as the tarp falling off a dump body does not.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I charge my actuals on the shorter road jobs. But if I know we're talking an extensive complex job I will charge a min 3hrs plus actual costs of materials.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:A little discrete checking of what other shops in your area charge wouldn't hurt. Everything I do is portable and in my area I charge mileage from the office to the job. Hourly plus expendables ie rods, wire, gas, steel (all at actual cost) etc.  My reasoning for this is it cuts down on paper work. I don't have to collect sales tax for every little locality that I do business in. Not sure how it works every where else but it works for me and that is something you will have to find for yourself.
Reply:In this part of the world it has always been pretty simple. Hourly rate, both for road time and work time. It covers everything including consumables to weld steel. Any rod or wire used that costs more than mild steel rods such as SS and aluminum are additional. If it was a regular customer, I charged my cost. If it was Joe Blow who I never saw before, it was 1 1/2 times my cost.
Reply:I'm at 65 for steel, 75 for other metals, 85 for cnc plasma.  With a 2 hour minimum for service work and 10 more an hour.  The only consumables that I charge for are for cast iron(mg250, ect because they retail for about 110 a pound) filler rod and stick.  We figure that everything else is covered by the shop rates.-MikeCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
