A friend of mine asked me how to weld silver. She wnats to make some jewelry out of her grandmothers old silver tableware. How would you do this?"Common sense is not very common"http://www.tahoekeyshome.com
Reply:If I was her, I'd go down to the local hobby shop, get one of those little butane micro-torches, and silver braze.   And you're going to want to use almost pure silver, most of the readily available silver solders contain about 25/50% silver, and up to 30% copper.  That's going to give you a joint that's darker than the base metal.  Silver melts at 1761, so you're going to want to use a high temperature flux when brazing.  If'n you don't want to braze it, I'd go with TIG.  Silver is very easy to weld, but if she's doing jewelry, she's going to need low power and good control, so she'll need a foot pedal.  I wouldn't advise trying to do jewelry with a torch-mounted amptrol.Just my .02Best regards, KbnitI r 2 a perfessional
