Hi Every one, Just joined your wonerful site,(first question)  recently bought a lincoln V205-T inverter,Do I really need a foot amptrol for better control, Complete novice at tigging and if I need a foot pedal might as well get one now. Many thanks Gordon,
Reply:You will highly regret learning to TIG weld without some sort of variable amperage adjustment, whether it be via foot or finger control.  I heavily recommend the foot pedal.
Reply:Look into the SSC Controls pedals.  They have an eBay outlet where they sell "blemished" products for a few bucks cheaper than the website but mine looked perfect when it arrived.  I like it a lot and it was quite a bit cheaper than the Miller pedal.  I haven't looked at the prices on Lincolns, though.
Reply:You really need the foot pedal. You are using your hands to move the torch AND apply the filler rod.The foot control allows you to weld at a bench or anything while sitting on a stool. The only reason you would need a hand control is because you are welding an addition on a sport fishing boat radar tower and there is no way to get at the foot control. A very rare situation.I t does happen but not very often.Imagine manipulating the torch and moving the hand control at the same time.Get the foot pedal. Do it right.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder

Reply:i agree both are handy. kinda hard to tack a fitting while holding it with your knee, rod in one hand, torch in the other while sitting on the ground hunkered up trying to work the pedal with a foot. and it never fails that's when  you get a cramp. so i'm going to get a finger control.
Reply:Get one!!
Reply:Hello Everyone,                     Thankyou so much for your prompt replies, Have taken your advice on board and checked around. some for sale on Ebay from SSC, they say it's the deluxe model with separate arc starter and amp control, Will cost me about $210 including shipping,Is this type of pedal ok? Regards  Gordon.
Reply:Hi, Guys,            I'v ordered one today from SSC,just waiting for the new toy to arrive across the pond and try and get some practice, if anybody has a V205-T I would be very grateful if they could let me know what settings I should use for 3mm aluminium, amps, slope, freq, pulse, balance etc.might save me a little time on the learning curve.  Many thanks  Gordon.
Reply:I don't have a V205T, but some here do.I would set the amps at 150, wave balance at 35% + electrode, (65% - electrode) frequency at 100 Hz to start with.  I would leave uplospe, downslope and pulse off.Play with all the settings and see what they do.Good luck, show us pictures!David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Hello David R,  Thank you for your advice, Don't know how long shipping from the U.S will take but really looking forward to it's arrival,I'v read all the info that says clean, clean, clean, but also seen a couple of video's where the welding takes place just relying on the cleaning action of the A/C current,Thanks again  Gordon.
Reply:I purchased the same pedal from SSC. It is better that the o.e.m.K-780 (I think that is the model #) in the fact that it doesn't slide around on the floor, it has a wider foot width and a heel rest that is adjustable for your foot position. It works the same as the K-780 but has a definite start detent which makes it easier to start at absolute lowest amperage. All in all I find it to be as good or better that the K-780.
Reply:Hello Everyone,                     Pedal arived today, all the way from the US of A, Had a few minutes practice and like it a lot. just have to put a lots of hours into getting used to tigging and foot pedal control, Seems a little like a novice trying to learn to drive and learn to play the piano at the same time!SSC pedal really nicely made but arrived with broken plastic knob that adjusts pedal length, not important but not strong enough for a pedal that is going to spend it's life being shuffled into position by a welders boot,Regards  Gordon,
Reply:I'll wade into this one.. I started out with out a amptoller and did without one for years so if you don't have one you will do OK , HOWEVER once you have one you;ll love it particularly in ally! In short yes get one .As to hand vs foot . The first one I got was a Lincoln hand amp ... great for my work, balustrading where the piece maybe up to 7m long but never liked the caterpillar control it was aquard to use , maybe there are better designs out there but the Lincoln is crap.Got a foot controller and which is better? The simple answer is once I got the foot controller the hand amp has only been used once....A good guess is better than a bad measurement
