position cert question

Hello all, got a question for all those who are certified- on your cert card if you are certified in "all positions" for a particular process (example smaw) does it list them individually or does it say "all". Also does this "all" also include pipe positions or not. My shop is recruiting a certified welder and I think he may be bogus, don't want to send up any flags just yet so I thought someone out there would know.

Reply:Qualification for welding pipe can  be obtained by welding on plate however there are restrictions.Using ASME Sec IX as an exampleA welder who qualifies on plate using a groove weld is qualified for welds on pipe in the flat or horizontal postion provided the diameter is greater than or equal to 2.875 . For pipe greater than 24" the welder can weld on any position of pipe.Most of the codes require a welder to be tested and certified by the company that they will be employed by. There are exceptions where previous certification can be accepted.The best way for your company to see if he is "bogus" is to test him.Have a nice dayhttp://www.weldingdata.com/
Reply:trweld,I don't know where you live, but here in Ontario, the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) certifies welders for structural steel welding (plate, etc.) and the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) certifies welders for pipe welding.  If you're looking to get certified by TSSA, you will need to be tested to a Welding Procedures Specification (WPS).  WPSs are usually created by the employer.
Reply:If he's certified through AWS, their classification cards are pretty distinctive, and will list their cert number which can be verified through AWS.  If it's a typical classification card such as that issued on a job site, well, that's not really worth the paper its printed on regarding "certification."
Reply:Thanks all the replies, I really don't won't to create too much of a hassle for this guy or cause him any problems, but I'm just trying to protect my guys and my business. What do the certification cards? or credentials actually look like. I don't have any certified welders in the shop, although my guys are outstanding welders and some have been doing this as I have for over thirty years. I don't know what the credentials look like or what too expect to see. Any help would be great, Thanks.
