Hello all,This is my first post here but I have been reading and cant really find what I am looking for, so I started my own thread. I have started building headers for high performance Cummins diesel motors and have been using my mig. I build them out of steel sch40 1.5" pipe, 90s, and 45s, with .5" custom waterjetted head and turbo flanges. I am looking to start building them from sch10 stainless steel, and tig welding everything. My question is, what tig machine will be best for what I am doing? I would really like to get a 110v machine. Also I have never touched a tig welder so I need something easy to use right now. Here is one another company makes out of stainless...Lincoln Wire-matic 255Bodie Armstrong
Reply:I dont think 110v will work for you.  Try and get the biggest you can afford.  Go red or Blue. LOLThere are so many.  Try and get one 250amp or higherNice headers weld it like you own it

Reply:Thanks for the replies guys, all I will use the Tig for are the headers, as I have a spool-gun on my mig for aluminum. What should I be spending on a complete setup? I see some of the smaller machines don't come with the torch and pedal.Lincoln Wire-matic 255Bodie Armstrong
Reply:How about a invertec 155?Lincoln Wire-matic 255Bodie Armstrong
Reply:In all honesty, for shd 10 at that sort of size 120 amps is heaps. HF would be the main thing I'd be looking for with your usage.I'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
Reply:hello i came across your article on net and hav few doubts and ll be happy if you can clear them out.. i have few boiler tubes of material SA335 Grade P1(no chromium). suggest the suitable filler material . if ER 8056 can be used??/ what is TGSM 1/2 molybedunum and TIG S2 and if they can be used ?? what does DIN 2778 15 Mo 3 and DIN 17175 15Mo 3 correspond to??
Reply:These are the two I am considering...Invertec 155  $949http://www.bakersgas.com/LINK2606-1.htmlInvertec 160   $1366 + torch and gaugeshttp://www.bakersgas.com/LINK1845-1.htmlThese were the best prices I could find, would they be cheaper anywhere else?Lincoln Wire-matic 255Bodie Armstrong
Reply:V155 has no foot pedal, or a place to plug one in.  Take that into consideration.  I have the V155, its a great welding machine. What ever you buy, don't go too cheap because you will have it for ever. David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Will the 160 have the ability to produce a better weld with all the adjustments and features? Or will it be something I will never use for its intended application? Why is a foot pedal better than the control on the torch?Lincoln Wire-matic 255Bodie Armstrong
Reply:I've run the big brother of the V160, the V270 and am going to get myself one.  Old faithful (V200T) finely run out of steam.Pedals are well. I'll shut my mouth The one extra I do like for s/s is pulse. But it's an extra that's well nice.I'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
Reply:MILLER DYNASTY DX 200 I love mine and sch 10 stainless and the pulser all made for each other.
Reply:Oh My God, F/B, did you say "pulser"!!!!!....I'm gonna have to go with you on that one, even though there's a considerable range of opinions on this forum regarding the value of the pulser, with thin gage, you can't beat it.For 115vac, I would respectfully suggest the Maxstar 200.  Carries like a lunchbox, has pulser, and accomodates a foot pedal.  Armstrong, I like the foot pedal over the torch control because it's one less thing you have to do with your hands while you're concentrating on adding that filler metal.  One hand guides the torch, the other places the metal, and the foot handles the current.  Just one opinion.Regards, KbnitI r 2 a perfessional
Reply:Looks to me like you are doing a bang up job with what you got now.A butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug

Reply:Perhaps you misunderstood.   The V155 has NO provision for a remote of any kind.  I was tig welding with mine today.  It works great.  I was welding 1/8" angle building a cart for the V155 ... Yeah, it doesn't need a cart, but my son started it.  I even have a 20cf argon tank for it. I just set the machine for 75 amps.  I had to wait a little for a puddle, and when I got to the top if the fillet, it was pretty darn hot.  A remote would have been nice.   I have a thing..... Build the cart with the machine that is going on it. This is my Fischer Price welder. Here is a reviewhttp://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...ghlight=V155-SDavid Last edited by David R; 11-10-2008 at 04:44 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Ok ok 110v it is.  I just figured he would grow into a bigger one.I know hes welding SS, but Im sure aluminum jobs and such are just around the corner  easy now....Last edited by lewray; 11-10-2008 at 09:03 PM. weld it like you own it
Reply:You really need an industrial grade TIG machine with foot pedal and water cooling.Get a used Lincoln or Miller syncrowave. You will have no problems and your work will be professional.BTW way .... who bends those tubes? Is it a kit?AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:They are just regular 90s, I make mine out of steel sch 40 1.5 id buttweld 90s and 45s, like you would use for a handrail. They have to be fairly thick as they are holding up 70+mm turbos some of them twins. A good race truck will see 1600-2000* exhaust gas temps and over 100lbs of drive pressure.I am really leaning towards a Invertec 160...Lincoln Wire-matic 255Bodie Armstrong
Reply:You could also consider the HTP 160 amp dc machine.  It has a foot pedal as standard, has pulse and high frquency start and runs up to 140 amps off of 110v (160 @ 220v).  I don't remember the price, but I'm  pretty sure that it's cheaper than red or blue.  I have one of their 201's and it has really turned out to by a nice machine (hobby use for me).  Another machine that may be worth considering is the Miller diversion.  Uses finger control and is an AC/DC machine.  I really like inverter based machines.  Their power consumption is much less than their transformer counterparts and they are small.  In the end, buy what you can afford but try to get the most power that you can.
