I have to run an oil line at work.  As the title states, it is going to be 6 inch sch 40 pipe.  Well I have always supported this pipe about every 12 foot in the past but in this next project I have a span across an open area.  I am wonding what the "law" is for an unsupported span on 6 inch.  This span would be about 25 foot from a bridge to a tank support.  I would like to get away without building a bridge and all of that stuff.  I have a few other ideas.  What are some other ideas you folks have?  Thanks for the help in advance.  Matthew

Reply:mssp69 says  17 feet for water service.  not sure about petroleum industry standards but  should be similar. same standard says 16" pipe can span 25 feet. you could build the bridge or put a piece of 16" in your 6" run..if you do , use flatbottom eccentric 16 x 6 reducing couplings  , if you use concentrics  they'll create a lowspot in your line..if you welded a rib to the top of the 6" it would act as a stiffener, but iof there was ever an accidenet the liability would be there...
Reply:As this is a petro line there are codes for manufacturing. These codes will detail support.
Reply:Sorry about calling it a oil line.  It is crude sunflower oil.  I am sure that will not make a differance.  It looks like I will be building a bridge.  Thanks a lot Matthew
Reply:is it carbon steel pipe ?can you use a section of rectangular tubing for the span. You could use a small truss on top of it to minimize any sag.insert thoughtful quote from someone else2000 Thermal Arc 300GTSW 3.5 hours1946 Monarch 20 x 54 Lathe1998 Supermax 10x54 Mill2004 Haco Atlantic 1/2" Capacity Lasernot mine but i get to play with it
Reply:Yes it is mild steel pipe.  I should be getting started on it in a week or so.  It may be a little cold for my blood this week for it.  It is a whole whopping 1 deg out there right now.  Matthew
Reply:Could you build a cable support, attached on both ends. Support the pipe in the middle with the cable?Tim Beeker.
