Hello AllI'm wanting to start a class in Winnipeg come this spring but my math is not so good what do I need to be studying to get into the class? And  is there anything else that I should be preparing for the class. I'm looking forward to the hands on work but the book work is scaring me.Thanks for the help Lolotart
Reply:As far as math goes, I would study fractions, decimals, and geometry.  What you should do is contact the admissions office at the school and they will probably tell you exactly what any prerequisites are.    Welcome and good luck!- If you can jump across it you can weld it!  - anonymous old boilermaker
Reply:When I was in grade school (IIRC), my teacher wanted the students to practice doing arithmetic problems so we would become fast. I thought it was a waste of time, that I wouldn't need to know things fast and I could always figure them out easily. My father could just look at a bunch of numbers and add them without even thinking, but because I was stubborn, I never got really good at it, and now realize it would have been worth the effort.Like the repeated manipulation of welding equipment to get good at using it, math is no different. Just make up your mind you're going to work at it until it's easy and don't let it intimidate you. Find someone to work with who can explain it so you really understand it, if that is necessary, and then practice until you can easily explain what you're doing to someone else.Maybe we could even start some threads about math problems here.Good 'Luck"----luck being what you make it.
Reply:Thank for the in put. You see i have just gone back to do my upgrading so my math level is like grade 10 :o so I'm working on it but I just want to to study for what I need for the welding class. Maybe you can give me a math quetion that I would use in welding. Thank you so  much lolotart
Reply:Adding measurements.  5 and 5/8 + 3 and 3/4, that's a biggie.Interpolation.  If there are twelve notches on a power dial, with 20 being the lowest amp setting, and 250 being the highest setting, you need to figure out how many amps each notch is equal to, so you know what you've actually set the machine at.Simple stuff.
Reply:No trying to be an A$$, but can you read a tape measure? Can you add and subtract measurements? You wouldn't believe how many "experienced" hands that say they can, and then you hear them fumble with their words when it comes to take or give a measurement. With that being said, work on decimals and fractions, like what was stated above. You'll use them ALL the time.
