I've asked a million dumb questions about my upcoming cage project, and this may be the last before I get started and start posting pics.  I'm doing the prep and install of my roll cage and then having it finish welded by a pro.  Does .120 wall DOM need to be beveled or no?  I would lean towards no as it's not really that thick, but I wouldn't want to have to disassemble everything later and re-do it.Those that say "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" just don't understand!Fast-Cheap-Reliable:  Pick two.
Reply:No, I wouldn't go to the trouble.  You're better off spending your time on getting the rest of the fit up perfect.  Tight joints with consistent or no gap, and good clean metal to weld to are more important.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:Don't bevel it per se, but I always knock off the perimeter of the fish mouth with a 3M disc.  This ensures that the weld is being made into the meat of the material, not into a feathered edge.
Reply:Thanks.  I'll just hit up the edges with a die grinder/sanding wheel to make sure it's clean. Now once I finally get to go on vacation I'll be ready to get started! Those that say "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" just don't understand!Fast-Cheap-Reliable:  Pick two.
Reply:Without beveling the connection you will not get 100% joint efficiency. It really depends on what you want out of it. It sounds like a little bit of work for a better end product.. I would bevel it. You don't need to bevel it 100%, just 1/16"."Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful." -- Seneca the Younger

Reply:With the proper size fillet welds, beveling won't be needed.  If you're having a "pro" do the welding on it, you may want to talk to them about the fitups they want before you go putting it together.Proud to be a UNION worker.  Better pay, better benefits, better work environment.  UA Unions = working for the working class!!
