Slow helmet repsonse

Has anyone experienced slow auto dark due to cold temperatures?  I did some welding this week in the cold and I was getting an initial flash.  Changed batteries and no change in response time.
Reply:What kind of helmet are you using? We were on a field job last week, about -5F without wind chill. My Miller elite worked fine, so did my buddies Lincoln (I think that Lincoln is actually made by Optrel though)We were wondering how they would work in the cold, but didn't encounter any problems.
Reply:No name budget helmet.  Has worked fine for several years.
Reply:I wonder if the sensors were frosting over.I'd also be surprised if Optrel made the Lincoln Helmets.  Maybe they started outsourcing the actual autodark units to them, but I've seen the actual hoods being injection molded in the Lincoln factory.
Reply:I don't know about the hood itself, I saw the Optrel logo on the A/D unit. I'll look when I see it again.
Reply:I think speedglas doesn't recommend their hood below 25F. I've used mine to -10F though with no problems. I know a guy who used his in -40F and said it worked but was a little sluggish. Getting cold in the Mojave is it?

Reply:I'm was thinking the same thing as the guy from Alaska, Cold in the Mohave Desert?  We just got through a couple of weeks of where it was consistently -20 to -30 and it was miserable working on anything in the garage.  I took my cheapo auto dark helmet and set it in front of a quartz flood lamp for a while before I put it on.  Now I was thinking that was to charge it up, but the heat on the glass probably didnt' do it any harm either.  You might want to try that before striking up an arc.
