I've owned a Lincoln 225 AC welder for years. I weld primary mild steel repair jobs around the farm. I pretty much just use 6011. Works good, especially on old rusty metal with three coats of paint! A friend told me a while back I should try some 7018 made for AC for some of my welding. Didn't know they made electrodes for AC. The truth is: I've not done any research for years so I'm sure there's probably better stuff on the market nowadays. Any suggestions I should try for electrodes for my old AC buzzbox welding mild steel? Thanks.
Reply:Jetweld LH-70 E7018 H4R AC, DC+That's a 7018 rod from Lincoln used for mild steel(it's a low hydrogen rod.)
Reply:6013Some say it is a sheet metal rod...fine, so it is.  But I have made high quality, fast welds with it for serious repair.  It is all in joint prep and technique.Hobart's AC7018 rod is the best AC 7018 rod I have found.  It is stamped AC7018 on the rod.A 7014 welds fine on AC.  Serious speed with this rod.  Makes beautiful shiny "dimes".Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:i would use 6011 and standard ole 7018.  you can use ac7018, but the regular 7018 will run also.other rods to consider are 6013, and 7014.some say over 90% fo texas is held together with 6011.  it is the rod of choice for most farmers with an ac tombstone.
Reply:I've welded strictly AC for a lot of years.  I mostly used 6013 and 6011.7018AC is pretty good stuff, sort of a PITA to restrike but leaves a nice looking strong weld.  Deeper penetration than 6013, and probably safer for critical stuff.  It's a little pricey, and doesn't store well for long periods without special storage facilities.I'd favor 6011/13 if you don't weld too often, or don't make big stuff that's gonna use up a 5lb. box of the 7018ac right away."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:6013 all around smooth arc and bead on AC.  7014 is great for supper smooth flat beads and horizontal fillets with AC.  6011 if you need deep penetration and fast freeze, good for out of position, but it can run rougher, more spatter, and give a coarse bead.  As the farmer implies, no point in buying 7018 if you're gonna open it up and not use it all, since the point of it is to be "low hydrogen" to help prevent underbead cracking in higher strength steels.Last edited by pulser; 01-26-2009 at 06:14 PM.
Reply:6013 and 7014.  Both work great on AC.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Samm,The AC7018 restrikes so much easier.  I think the flux is different, at least on the Hobart.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:The 7018 and 7014 will give you deeper penetration and have more tensile strength.  That only matters depending on what you're welding and if you need the extra strength. Personally, I would use the ESAB Atom Arc 7018 because of its versatility.Welding is my hobby, I just happen to get paid for it!
