A guy called me up, says his regular guy is to busy and can/t get to him in near future, He has and auto salvage yard and has payloaders with large forks for moving and loading the cars. Apparently the tips of the forks wear rapidly from rubbing on the pavement and they routinely reinforce the tips with" wear plate" which he says he already has. question is I don't know what plate they have and I don't do much with wear plate. Will 7018 be alright to use on the plate and forks or is there something better to use. I imagine those forks must be hardened? Any help appreciated.I guess I should note I'll be using a DC gas drive stick welder."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:Wear plate is just too vague.  If forced to guess, I'd say use some preheat, say to 250-300F, and 7018, followed by some slow cooling under a weld blanket.  But if your wear plate is some weird alloy, or if the forks are heat treated/surface treated, I won't swear that it won't crack as it cools.Maybe you'll get lucky and the wear plate will have an identifying mark of some kind that tells you what alloy it is or who made it...I'd get him to call his regular guy and ask how the work was done successfully in the past.  Otherwise take your best shot and get a clear understanding that you can't guarantee the work.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:I'd get a hardsurfacing rod, not 7018.  The following are Lincoln tradenames, so you may have to go to a LWS that carries Lincoln rods to get them or whatever the equivalent rod is. * what I would try first.  Ask for pre-heat and interpass temp requirements, limits on number of layers, different rods for layers, AC vs DC, rod dia vs current, etc.FACEWELD 12 - CrCarbide - Highest abrasion resistance, moderate impact resistanceFACEWELD 1 - CrCarbide - Slightly lower abrasion resistance, slightly higher impact resistance *ABRASOWELD - Hi C, Cr - Moderate abrasion and impact resistance *STAINWELD - Hi C, Cr? - Low abrasion resistance, highest impact resistanceMangjet - Hi Mn - Like Stainweld, but for use on high-manganese steelJETWELD LH BU90 or LH70 - Like StainweldTeddCoHTP Microcut 400 & Invertig 160DC  Smith Dual Guard MD-510 OA Rig  Lincoln SP135+  Hobart Stickmate LX 235/160
Reply:wear plate is been found to be AR235,on the lower end of the Britnell hardness and can be welded with 7018. May want to step up to AR400, anybody know AR400?"Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:Check out this post to another message board.  It should answer most of your questionshttp://hobartwelders.com/weldtalk/sh...d.php?p=131980AR400 is a higher strength, higher hardness version of AR235.  Probably more expensive and possibly more temperamental when it comes to welding...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:i see from teddcos post that the hardface rods list cr chromium as ingredient.. nasty sh** to breath...
Reply:I have some AR 400 plate in my barn.  I weld it with either 7018 on up through 11018.  I prefer 11018.  Preheat a little, and have at it (grind off mill scale).  May have to post heat the welds a little to keep from cracking when the weld shrinks.Good Luck.
Reply:Sorry, misread your post and didn't get that you are welding a wear plate onto the fork.  The first three rods in the list above have Rockwell ratings between 40-65C (> 388 BHN) and are suggested for grader blades, bucket lips, harrow discs, and dipper teeth.  Plan B if the client gets tired of replacing wear plates?TeddCoHTP Microcut 400 & Invertig 160DC  Smith Dual Guard MD-510 OA Rig  Lincoln SP135+  Hobart Stickmate LX 235/160
