I have been tig welding pipe and have problems with the bead laying flat sometimes and other times nice and rounded over. It's really aggravating especially when trying to put a two or three bead cap on. Here is the equipment and setup: 1/8 " 2% thor. tungsten, # 6 (root) or #10 jumbo cup, air cooled 17v torch, 3/16 stickout on tungsten (more if needed for root on thicker pipe) between 100 and 115 amps dcen.Any suggestions/pointers would be appreciated !!!
Reply:Aim for a flat bead, then push it in with the next run, otherwise you can end up with excessive peen.I'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
Reply:wirehunt: so you're saying that a flat bead is not bad? and another noob question: what do you mean by peen?
Reply:probably not related to your issue but 1/8 tung seems big for what u r doing
Reply:Sorry, excessive penetration. So long as you have all the edges and are not under on the inside all 'should' be good.I'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
Reply:if im not mistaken penatration should be anywhere between 1/16 to 1/8... and i dont think the 1/8 tungsten is too big, thats the size that i use on all the pipe that i weld. but i guess thats just personal preference. as fas as the bead being too flat, that usually means lack of wire.. try feeding it more wire and you should get a little bit more hump
Reply:gto: that may be the problem.... now that I think about it. I am going to work on that. practice practice and try to be more consistant. thanks for all the comments. |
