Been tigging for a couple of years and am basically satisfied with my single shade basic helmet.My brother came by the other day and insisted that I get with it and try an auto shader. Just to act on the impulse, we went to Menards and got the 69.97 Clarke branded helmet. Adjustable 9-12, two sensors, solar cells, aaa battery backup. 1/20,000 rated switching speed. I've read on forums that it is a perfectly acceptable product. Went right home, put in fresh batteries, and took'er for a spin. There is a very brief flash before the lens darkens... just enough to be irritating and leave a 'spot' when i blinked. My brother tried the helmet. He has a similar (different brand, he's visiting from Australia) budget helmet and wasn't certain, but felt this was not "quite right". Next day we were in Grand Rapids, MI and went to the Harbor Freight store. I've read that the Chicago Electric helmet from HF is a respectable product, so I went ahead and got one. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=91214Two sensors, solar cells, 9-13 shade external adjustment, 1/25,000 rated speed, non-replaceable recharge cell. (big deal.. if it ever fails, i'll pop the casing and solder in a new one). ""Chicago Electric" embossed in the plastic above the lens. On sale from 59.95 down to 49.95. Good looking lens (looks better built than than Clarkes). Got it home and, following directions, left it under a lamp overnight to power it up. Next day I try it out. Same thing. Just enough flash each time I strike to give me spots. In fact, just enough flash to obscure the arc momentarily until my eyes readjust. I tried all the settings, shade and light sensitivity adjustment. Same thing. Is this anyone elses experience? This won't do. If it weren't a Saturday afternoon, I'd go down to my nearest welding gas outlet and see if they will let me test drive a 300 dollar helmet. But I've read enough on these forums and failed to note any similar dissatisfaction with these budget helmets. 1/25,000 sec is 1/25,000 sec... right? if these helmets are performing as rated, perhaps I just won't be happy with an auto shader? Anybody else had this problem?Should I just hold my concern until I'm able to try out the Jackson or the Speedglas?
Reply:I'm not sure about this but my understanding is that TIG is lower amps than Stick or MIG and not all auto-darkening helmets work well with TIG.Can you try a Speedglass without having to commit yourself to making the purchase? Reply:One time I barrowed a $49 import hood, not sure what brand it was was, and noticed about the same thing. Not enough flash to make me see spots but just enough to tell it. I have used the higher end harbor frieght hoods up to the higher end hoods like Jackson's and speed glass and have seen that with the better hoods. Bye the I haven't seen the higher end harbor frieght helmet for sale for quite some time.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:I've got a Jackson 3n1 and I get no flash when I initiate an arc with either TIG or MIG.Does the helmet have a sensitivity adjustment? If so, you may want to try resetting it.Rex
Reply:I just bought 2 self darkening helmets from northern for about $50 in change each and arc welded with them and there are great no flash whatsoever, they say on the box good for tig, mig and arc..
