I've heard that there is a guy, somewhere in the world of welding gods, that can weld 2 cigarette wrappers together? Like the metal foil that the cigs are covered in inside the box. I heard you have to scrape the paper wrapping off of the backing....I've heard of the soda can thing. Where you cut one in half and weld it back together. What about Aluminum foil? Anyone tried it? Is it even possible? Is the foil too contaminated with... whatever?! HAHAWhat's the thinnest anyone's welded before?
Reply:my buddy wayne can make you a potato chip bag out of aluminum foil.....he claims it will hold water too.only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:It's just a "parlor" trick, with no skill involved!---------------John

Reply:use both sides...
Reply:My tig only goes down to 5 amps, so I can't weld too thin but here are some .008" razor blades I welded the other day:Soda can:Wish I had a micro tig or a plasma welder. And the welding foil thing is simple, no real skill involved.
Reply:There's actually more experience with this sort of thing on electronics boards believe it or not.   There really isn't a whole lot of time spent in the vast majority of welding tasks to make this a common skill  ( i got the hang of it tig-fixing finely detailed injection molding dies).  With the advent of SMT (surface mount devices) in the electronics trade,  most guys are learning to work with finer instruments and magnification.   What many have discovered, surprisingly, is that excepting DTs, caffiene abuse, crack addiction, or very advanced age, most of us are perfectly capable of transferring macro skills to micro skills in pretty short order.   It's a difference in scale more than technique and our micro motor skills, under some magnification especially, are better than most of us would at first think. With a fine enough tungsten, cup, and rod,  good lower amp control on your machine,  little less argon,  and ideally some magnification on your helmet,  extremely fine welding, just like SMT soldering,  soon seems as natural when your brain adjusts to the scale as welding the bigger stuff.Last edited by frascati; 03-04-2009 at 01:10 PM.
