My first MIG project of a welding bench is nearing completion, all I need to finish it off it some material I can use underneath the top of my bench that can catch the bits of hot stuff that drops off.I want material as it's flexible, easy to move, and my knees can sit under the bench and won't be hindered by a solid object. Is there a material that will withstand the hot bits that fall down ??
Reply:eyspy,  You can look into welding blankets. There are many options, this was just the first link in line.http://www.steelguardsafety.com/weld...FUM-3godbTLKbQIf you can not find something like this to fit your budget, you might find a piece of leather big enough to work for you. Not sure if it will be less expensive, but worth checking out. Try anyplace that does leather work of any kind.jrw159
Reply:Steiner mades an excellent carbon fiber blanket  called Velvet Shield, Dize makes welding curtains. Both products can be located or order at your local welding supplier. Both are also available at  http://www.northerntool.comThe Steiner blankets come in many sizes 18" x18" (@ $11.99) all the way up to 8'x10' ($209.99). And protect against direct contact with splatter and temps up to 1800F.The also sell fiberglass blankets which are cheaper 4'x6' (@39.99) and protect against light - moderate splatter and temp to 1000F.Hope that helps,TomCo-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.

Reply:Note that there is a BIG difference between a welding blanket stopping some spatter and stopping a big drip of molten steel that has fallen straight down and is heading for your legs.Welding blankets stop most spatter, although they may scorch or char and such.Stopping a big glob of molten steel that has fallen vertically onto a horizontal welding blanket because you melted right through your workpiece is NOT what I would want to rely on just a welding blanket above my knees to protect me.    Molten steel is 2000F + degrees, and a big blob of it will melt/burn right through a welding blanket.I'd rather have a steel or thick aluminum welding table to stop or contain the blobs.Oh, like you have never mis-set the parameters and blown right through a workpiece or test piece before, eh?    The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:Weldin' blankets are exspensive though. Maybe try "starched" denim. Just an idea!!!!Don't let that iron in your lungs, turn to lead in your @$$!!!!
Reply:Personally I would not be sitting at a  desk while I am welding something. Welding blanket of not safety comes to mind as well as to the body that might get badly burnt by sitting beneath and directly in front of the piece your working on.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
