Hi, I have a 1/2 bottle of helium left over from blowing up ballons for my wedding. I was wondering if i can use it in any way for welding? I have a mig welder with one flowmeter and a scratch start tig gun  that i have yet to try. Is helium any good for anything like this. Thanks for any replys!!!
Reply:If it's 'balloon-grade helium', nope.  Just use it for more balloons sometime. If it's 'welding-grade helium', maybe.  Look up about shielding gases on some websites like Lincoln or Miller or ESAB.www.lincolnelectric.comwww.millerwelds.comwww.esabna.comOr look up Heli-Arc welding.  Like here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heliarc  The best laid schemes ... Reply:You can use helium for TIG welding...in fact a lot of older cats still call it Heli-arc because they used to use helium.'Mike

Reply:" Balloon helium" contains at least 18%-21% O2. This is so the little kiddies don't expire from breathing in 100% helium. FYI Don't ever use 100% welding helium to fill balloons for kids parties, as tempting as it may be. You need CO2 to drive the body's breathing reflex, and inhaling 100% HE can basically "stall" your lungs. You didn't inhale O2, so the body doesn't produce CO2 in a large enough quantity to trigger the breathing reflex. Since you don't exhale to rid your body of CO2, you don't displace the HE and draw in O2. This will continue to repeat until you are dead. The O2 in balloon helium will make it unusable for welding.
