not happy to admit it, but i screwed up. i had to put a new bottom and wear strips on a back hoe loader bucket, 90" wide bucket. welded 3" channel from cutting edge to top of bucket for support. gouged out old bottom. then preped areas to be welded. had new plate formed (1/4" mild steel). fit plate. tacked wear strips ( t-1 1/2 x 6 x 24) to bottom. weld this all as needed (i thought). cut out channel and the cutting edge bowed up 5/8" +/-. any suggestions?
Reply:did you let it cool thoroughly before removing brace?  i have also seen this happen at the local shop when putting a new cutting edge on.  they now clamp the bucket and edge to the solid edge of the table preheat edge at weld location to somewhere around 500 or so degrees then start at edge of bucket on each side welding in about three inch increments then move towards center and weld back three inches to meet the first weld and repeat.  they have had very good success with this technique   hope that helps somewww.burdettenetworks.com
Reply:yes it was cooled before removing brace maybe not 100% but it was cooled. i did the skip weld thing alternating directions. the edge was bowed already alittte before i did anything at all. i thought about pushing it beyond straight or as straight as it could be. but, was afraid of it staying.
