I have some broken 1" carburized rock drill steel that I want to cut the shank of and weld a custom U shaped end on it to mount on my air hammer to drive steel plate intto the ground. Can this type of work possible? what type of rod? does it need to be heat treated again after the welding? preheat post heat? This is just for one job i have to drive 2 steel plates so it does not have to last very long.
