I recently bought a oxy-acet cutting outfit and am wondering if i really need the arrestors, hardly any of the experienced torch users i know use them and say forget them and save my $80.What are your opinions?Lincoln 225 ACLincoln Mig Pak 15Lincoln Mig Pak 10Purox Oxy-Acet Outfit20 Ton PressHonda Generator
Reply:I use them, partly because I am inexperienced. I think new O/A welders (especially the self taught ones) are more likely to do the kinds of things that can create a back flash. It only takes one big mistake with O/A, so why take a chance? There must be some reason that Victor, and now Smith, build them into their torch handles.Lincoln 175HD Miller AC/DC ThunderboltSmith AW1, Dillion (Henrob) Mark III, & Smith LittleTorch
Reply:Kinda like 'who uses seat belts'. I don't use flash backs, I do use a seat belt. Go figger.
Reply:i have a set of them on every torch i own. sure theyre a little salty but so is the ER and caskets! hahaonly thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:I found mine on sale because nobody would pay the asking price. I think I gave 10 or 15 bucks for the set years ago at home depot. They are the ones that go on the regulators. I heard that you should bump up the pressures a bit when using them. I haven't noticed much of a difference,Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:flashback arrestors are a must , i dont want that flame burning back up to the tanks damaging the regulator or explosion, safety first!
Reply:I have them on all of my portable rigs but not on any of the shop rigs.   And the only reason their on the portable rigs is when going out in the field on huge projects with "Safety Managers" they usually insist on it.One safety guy insisted I have them on the torch end AND the regulator end,Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.

Reply:I have them on the torch end, and the regulator end.  Why?  In the event of a burnback through the torch, the ones on the torch end will save the hose.  In the event of something hot burning through a hose and thus causing a burn back to the regulator/cylinder, the ones on the regulator will save the regulator, and perhaps YOU.  Most insurance companies require them.If you have never seen a burn back, you see no need for them.  I was filling in as a Metal Body Instructor at APG, MD when they were short handed.  Paddle soldering phase.  Real short hoses on the O/A setups.  I missed it, the other instructors missed it, and the student missed it.  Student ran the O cylinder empty.  He tells me his torch won't shut off.  I immediately see the problem.  A was backing up the O hose and entering the O cylinder.   Every time he shut off the A valve, he still had flame.   I shut off the A and O knob on torch handle.  Immediately a burn back started up the O hose.  I hollered "evacuate building".  And as fast as I could shut off the O cylinder valve (We taught them to open valves all the way).  I was able to prevent the explosion inside the tank, but the regulator disintegrated.  To this day, I do not know if enough A entered the O tank to explode, but I still Thank Him for it not happening.Yes, they're expensive, but so are buildings, and funerals.  BUY THEM!
Reply:I cant use them, most of the time my gas pressures are under 3lbs, and at that gas flow rate even if I cut a hose......it doesnt do anything that wild. Ask me how I know!
Reply:80$ or your life ?? That should be easy. I use them. always have.Lincoln Ranger 8Lincoln 140c MigLincoln Tombstone(doesn't everybody have one ?)Miller 200Diesel/Heavy Equipment MechanicLead Plant Mechanic Municipal Water
