Well, this was going to be a post about my new-to-me Miller Suitcase 8VS feeder I just got the other day.  I was so happy too.  I was going to take a couple pics of it and post them up here and talk about my plans to use the new feeder on the truck with the Bobcat and XMT.  I was going to go do a job with it this morning and find out how well it works, since I only ran one short little bead with it when I was at the sellers house to check to see that it worked.  That was Wednesday (2 days ago).   Today is Friday.  I didn't have occasion to use the Suitcase feeder  on a job since I bought it, so today was going to be it's first day on the job.  BUT, no, that didn't happen...I went out to the truck this morning, my helper just showed up at the door and I walked out to the truck to open the door so he could put his stuff in the back seat and I was just about to say 'Hey, check out the new Suitcase feeder I just bought!'.  Well, the words right at the tip of my tongue and my arm was about reaching out to point to the feeder, when I looked at the spot where I had put the feeder last night and... THE FEEDER WASN'T THERE!!!!!   It was GONE!!!!  Missing from the truck!!   I had to take a second look cause I wasn't believing my what my eyes were telling me!  I had to think back momentarily to last night and ask myself if I had loaded the feeder into the truck, or somehow forgot to.  Nope, I loaded it, I was sure of it...  ...Then I saw the fragments of broken glass around the window frame on the other side of the truck, and I saw the pieces of broken glass on the floor near where the feeder SHOULD have been...  My jaw dropped.  My heart sank.  I got that queezy feeling in my stomach.  The feeder was gone..  My new toy that I was so proud of had been stolen in the night! Then I walked around to other side of the truck and saw all the glass on the ground next to the truck and noticed that one of the padlocks to one of the side doors of my utility body was missing.  I thought, great, they got into the tool boxes too...Well, they cut off the padlock, but fortunately I have double locks on the doors and they weren't able to defeat the second lock, so apparently they tried to pry the door open, but couldn't open it.  Lucky for me.I walked around the truck checking all the doors and the tool box in the back and the Bobcat and other stuff I keep on the truck and fortunately nothing else was touched.  I looked through the cab and it didn't appear anything else had been touched.  My Jackson EQC and 3 small hand tool boxes and some other stuff were all still sitting there right next to where the feeder had been.  The stereo was still in the dash and hadn't been pryed on, none of the truck door locks were pryed on, in fact, all 4 truck doors were still locked!   The theif didn't even bother opening the doors, just smashed the window, reached in and grabbed the feeder, messed with trying to get the utility body door open and took off.I ended up re-scheduling the job I was going to do and spent the rest of the day dealing with the police, the insurance company, the locksmith (I got a full set of better padlocks), and then searching the junkyards for a new window.  Yay, what funnn...Well, it was quite a pleasure owning a Suitcase feeder... for all of 2 whole days... and didn't even get to do a job with it, or earn even one dime with it, before it disappeared...  So, that is my 'was-going-to-be-a-happy-post-but-now-a-sad-post' story of the day...Last edited by DesertRider33; 04-10-2009 at 07:36 PM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:That definitely is a bad deal.  I have always wanted to weld someone's car doors shut and write "Don't screw with a guy who can weld" with some 6011 across the hood.  If you ever find this lowlife let me know.  A piece of 2" x 1/8" flat can be bent around a drive shaft and welded solid up to the frame in short order.  Like I said bad deal, I know it doesn't help, but it could have been much worse.  At least they didn't tear up stuff just to be tearing it up.  I have had my home broken into during daylight hours, kicked in the front door on a busy road.  If I ever find that SOB.......

Reply:Hey DR where are you located? You should let us know, so we all can keep an eye on Ebay and the other thing is, craigslist. One more thing, we should almost do something about this post, just incase some dumbass tries to post it on here?? Just an ideaSorry to hear about that. I hate people like that. Had a couple of kids try to break in a couple of weeks ago and my big "F" dogs  stoped them. So they decide to steal a car with no heater, brakes and four flat tires. Got a mile down the road and State P pulled them over. I had to pay for the impound and the tow to the impound. I hate people like that, put a bullet in their head.

Reply:Thanks for the support guys.  I am north San Diego County, California.   I don't wanna say my city exactly in case the theif is reading here. The feeder you saw on Craig's List may have been the one I bought.  It was advertised on Tuesday and Wednesday.   I snapped it up quick as I could, it was a good deal.  I called and checked the serial number for possible reported stolen before buying it.  Came out clean.  Trouble is, I didn't record the serial number myself, just read it off the machine to the service person over the phone so he could check their data base.  Normally, I take pics of the serial number plates of my machines and pics of the machines in my garage, so there is a context of posession of the equipment that can't be denied, especially for those machines I didn't buy brand new and have no original reciept for.  However, I hadn't got around to doing that yet for this new-to-me machine! I have called the original owner of the machine and asked him to try to find his reciept with the serial number on it so I can give it to the police and insurance company.  He said he would try to find it.  The truck insurance will NOT cover the loss, except the broken window, which I already took care of myself.  The homeowners insurance MIGHT cover the feeder, but I don't know if they will give me actual retail value for it or just re-imburse me for what I paid for it.  I asked my local shop to print out a price quote for that model feeder with that gun on it so if the insurance company does give me retail value minus deductable, I might actually be able to afford to replace it.   If all they do is re-imburse me for what I paid for it, it won't be worth it to claim it cause the deductable is too high.   I should find out next week on that.I did find out I can get an special insurance policy (called an Inland Marine-something, doesn't have anything to do with boats) on my equipment that covers all of it, in the shop or in the truck, with a $100 deductable and (I think) replacement value coverage, for a (I guess) reasonable annual rate.  Rate depends on total dollar amount to be covered.  They quoted me $350/yr for $20,000 total.   Doesn't sound bad to me.Yes, I will be keeping a look-out on the usual for sale venues on the net.  Suitcase-8 feeders are a very, very rare find in this area, so if one pops up locally in the next few weeks, it could possibly be mine. This particular Suitcase 8VS was not the new "X-Treme" model, so it did not have meters or a Q-Gun. It had a (I think it was 15') Miller Iron Mate FC-1260 fluxcore gun on it with the big metal hand guard and no gas nozzle, just a fluxcore insulator, instead of the Bernard Q-Gun that they now normally come with.  It had a fairly new roll of .045 (I think it was McKay) E71T-GS in it.  I had just put a new Tweco male connector on the hot cable and a new .045 tip on the gun last night.  The gun whip did not have a cable cover on it, so the conduit/power cable and control cable were seperate and taped together.  The whip had a very long metal spring strain relief on the feeder end.  Inside and out, the case was in pretty good shape.  The original owner didn't use it that much.   The large sticker on the outside, as I remember it,  just said "Miller", not "Suitcase VS" like the newer ones.  It was a late 2005 model, according to Miller, if I remember right.  I am going to ask the guy I bought it from if he can email me the pics he had of it for the ad.  If I get them, I will post them here.  I was going to copy the pics off the ad after I bought it, just to have them (it hadn't been stolen yet at that time) but the ad had already been removed by the time I thought of it.   If any of you see a feeder matching this description that looks suspicious, feel free to send me an email at [email protected], or leave me a private message through the forum.  Thanks!!MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:As far as the guy I bought it from having something to do with the theft, while that thought did cross my mind at first, just because it happened so soon after buying it, I do not believe he has anything to do with it.  He lives way over on the other side of of the county from me, out in east county, and he did not have my address or business name, only my cell phone number and first name.   I don't think there is any way he could have found out my address.   From the time I bought it to the time it was stolen, I didn't have any 'customer' calls asking to bring something over to be welded so I didn't give out the address to any strangers during that short 2 day period.   Business has been slow the last 2 weeks.  I don't think there is any way he could have known who I was before I called on the ad and came to see the machine, so there is no logical reason he would have had my address from some previous communication.  It is my belief he is completely innocent.   He seemed very genuine each time I talked to him and he seemed genuinely concerned about it having been stolen when I called him tonight about the serial number.  I DONT THINK HE DID IT.I did have one time when I sold a truck to someone and then a couple nights later, I chased someone off who appeared to be casing out my other truck.  That was downright low.  I gave that guy a great deal on a very good truck.  No reason to come back and do me like that!My truck has been broken into at my house before in recent months and tools stolen from it.  Most likely, it is the same theif as before, since the same method of entry was used (smashing window).  Either that, or there are just alot of theifs around here...  I keep getting windows from the same truck at the same junkyard.  Hopefully I don't end up with a complete set of windows from that truck!!!Last edited by DesertRider33; 04-11-2009 at 12:00 AM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:In that case, maybe it was the junkyard people, wanting to sell you windows that did it!Seriously though!I have been giving this some thought. The thief may have started at your locked boxes first, thinking that would be where the prizes would be, and when that failed, they looked inside and saw what they thought was a portable mig welder, smashed the window, fearful of the noise being noticed only grabbed the suitcase and ran.Today, they are cussing cause they can't make it work!It will most likely show up in a pawn shop in a few days.#1. Reply:LOL yeah I bet they're having a heck of a time trying to figure out how to plug it into their wall outlet!  I think it's the same theif as last time cause this time they brought real tools.  They thought ahead enough to bring bolt cutters and a pry bar.  Last time, they musta only brought a small screwdriver  and weren't smart enough to figure out how to remove the stereo, so they just pryed on it with the small screwdriver and even that didn't accomplish anything.  The face plate on the stereo pops right off if you push it in.  The dummies couldn't get the face plate off!   Unsuccessful with the stereo, they rummaged through the cab of the truck and the glove box and got my tool box and bessey clamp and a few things from the glove box.  They didn't touch the utility body at all.   This time, they came prepared to do battle with the utility body.  They didn't take any interest in the stereo or glove box at all.  Your theory about seeing the welding machine through the window being the 'opportunistic' part of the crime may be true.  I think they came for the utility body and got an unexpected prize with the feeder.  Just like last time I think they came for the stereo and got an unexpected prize with the tool box.  The pipe clamp they probly still haven't figured out what to do with.   It's only useful for butt welding 2 pipes together.   If they're reading, well, I guess now they know what to do with it!MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:In the days before lawyers it was common to rig hoods of vehicles with a Model T ignition coil.  The old coil gave a stream of sparks using a vibrating set of points.  If you have kids around it is not a good idea.  Some people even rig them up to prevent dogs marking their wheels.Point well taken.Lug: in Canada, of all places, some burglars opened a tool box that killed one.  There was a court case over it but the toolbox was never directly connected to the body shop concerned.Last edited by lotechman; 04-12-2009 at 05:02 PM.
Reply:A good fence charger never hurt anyone..lol.But its a shame when personal defense of your property from a thief is considered wrong or a crime.  It used to be a God given right....As far as I am concerned, it is an extension of your home.  Here you are allowed to defend yourself if someone breaks into your home or private residence  with lethal force.  In GA,  a vehicle is considered personal property just like your home...Feel sorry for you guys living in those weenie states and countries that offer more rights to the law breaker than the victim.  Somehow the brainwashing has begun....However, I am with you on the kids thing...Just trying to inject a little humor.Last edited by lugweld; 04-12-2009 at 05:21 PM.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:In most states, if you shoot and kill someone that has broke into your house, you will be charged with something like involuntary manslaughter or some such crap! The mentality behind this is you should let the intruder have at it and just call the police and leave the law handle it.And if you get killed by the intruder, all that matters to them is that you didn't defend yourself and left it up to the law, they don't care anymore weather you get killed or not, your just another statistic to them.#1. If you don't like what I wrote, or if it offends you, then don't read it!#2. I am living life the way I see fit, if you don't like the way I'M living, tough sh**!
Reply:I have had many thoughts along these lines and here is what I came up with, use it or don't, I think it is entirely probable. If you post something on the web and then later on you are involved in a legal case, do not be surprised if your posts here show up in court. They can paint a pretty picture from your postings. I say screw all the lawyers, but it usually ends up the other way around. OJ would be rotting in jail if he had the internet prior to killing those two people. heheheh. That's just my opinion there.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:DesertRider,I feel for you buddy!!  I had a motor yacht that was parked in a marina that was having a lot of trouble with thieves braking in to boats.  I strung fishing line around the inside (visible from the outside) with tags hanging from them that said "warning," this vessel protected by 12ga "setgun",  you guess where it is pointed??  (Never had a break-in)   Might also put a sign on the truck that says "Dog sleeps in truck" (don't suggest your wake him up)(a cop friend of mine says lots of stolen stuff ends up on Craigs list)--I have always asked for sales documents for anything I buy of value and I always give the buyer the same!TimA rich man is not the one who has the most but instead one who needs theleast.
