Inverter Welding Machines

I am a graduate student in Croatia and I just got assigment from my profesor to write him an seminar concerning Inverter welding machines on 20 pages.I tried googleing for literature but couldn't find anything useful.I need help in finding some literature concerning inverters either articles or books.Please post me if you know anything

Reply:Lincoln Electric has an excellent DVD that starts things out for the layman.."Introduction to Inverter Technology".The whole basis is that there are massive savings in the weight of a transformer when you increase the frequency from 60 cycles per second to tens of thousands of cycles per second.  A transformer that weighed  36 KG  in an older welding machine now only weighs less than 5 KG  in an inverter based power source.  The numbers I use are approximate... some claim as much as ten to one saving.
Reply:Thanks lotechman I found basics all around but all I find are basics. And they are all saying the same thing. I need to expand it as I was given to write 20 pages on Inverters and I am having trouble finding any literature on them.

Reply:Kon,If you will look at the Chinese forums,  they are dealing with the issue of Mofset vs. IGBT technology in the inverters.  You might want to discuss that aspect of inverter design and issues regarding each configuration of inverters and the charachteristics of each. Reply:Thanks Lugweld you were helpfulI found some materials but most of those are from forums and from manufacturors catalogs. I couldn't find any article written about subject. I don't know how much material i got. But i know that when I look at the references I have it is pretty thin. I can't write forum threads as references. Only articles and books are allowed. And I could't find much I've got some articles from Welding, some articles from AWS Welding Journal. But because subject of these articles are overlapping I need to find more.
Reply:konjic,Take a look at the IEEE database of published research for info on the durability of MOSFETs vs. IGBT technologies.  You probably will not find articles specificly about inverter welding power supplies, but I'm confident that you could find some general research on the subject.  Use the info in the forums for Everlast, etc. to find out what chips or components are used in their products and look for generic info in the IEEE database for research on those pieces.IEEE database may be reachable online; or I imagine your university library has access to it.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
