Hi,I'm trying to find a piece of ~14" tubing or pipe at least .25" walled for a project I'm looking to build. I only need a single 1' piece, so I can't really go to my regular metal supplier and have him order an entire length if I only need 1'. Does anybody have any ideas on what kinds of places might have a something like this laying around? It's for a drum building jig I'd like to try out this summer. It'll be used as a form to bend wood around for snare drums. Thanks,JordanThermal Arc Fabricator 281Miller 350PMiller Syncrowave 200Lincoln ProCut-55Jackson NexGen
Reply:Where are you located? I have a 16" pipe, if that would work, that I could cut you a piece.
Reply:My local steel yard has short pieces of everything. They will cut what you want and they have a pile of drops waiting for guys like you that need little short pieces. Just go to your local steel yard and see what they have. You may also go to the local scrap yard. Not the can recycling center but the one with the big excavator looking machines with huge electromagnets on them for moving stuff. Around here you can get pieces for about .25 per pound. Just find what you need and ask the guys cutting up metal to cut it to approximate size and take it home. What are you building?
Reply:Hi,Thanks for the suggestions. We still have quite a bit of snow on the ground, but when it melts down a bit more I'll try running by the recycling yard. Hopefully they'll have something that fits the bill.I'm looking to make a jig to steam bend wood for snare drum shells. I want to steam the wood and use the 14" tubing to draw the wood around it. Pretty much exactly what's in this video, right around 2:38. I'd like to use a flywheel, ring gear, starter motor gear, and an impact wrench to power the whole thing and I have an extra airbag from a project truck to use for pressure on the roller. There's little chance I'm actually going to be able to make a useable drum anytime soon, but I've got to start somewhere.
