I'm interested in being able to make some small diameter rings for a couple of projects. I want to use 3/8" hot roll rod and make 3" diameter rings. I would buy a reasonable ring roller, but I can't find one that sounds like it would work for this. Anybody have a recommendation on a ring roller?Anybody have another technique that they use? Anybody have a source for rings? Just kidding, I want to make them myself. The projects are plant holders that look like old fashion lanterns, if that makes any difference.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
Reply:How many rings do you plan to make? If you only want to do a few, you could just heat and bend around a pipe.
Reply:Hi, Boost.I would need 2 or 3 to start. If it turns out well, I might want to do more. What would be the best way to heat and bend around a pipe? Propane? I do not have an O/A torch. Would I tack to the pipe, heat, and bend? or ? I want to put one ring at the end of a rod, then bend the rod at 90 degree angle down the length of the rod.I'm just thinking and figuring at this point. Any suggestions would be appreciated.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
Reply:You can use a Mapp torch found at Home Depot/Lowes for the trial run- heck they come in handy so might as well get oneIffin' is something that works and you wanna make a lot of em' then invest in a either a O/A kit or a Oxy/propane or a propane forge. You'll need to find a piece of pipe to bend the 3/8" rod around to make the ring.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:3/8" hot rolled could prolly be done cold if you used about a 2.25-2.5" OD pipe and the coil method make sure you leave the round stock plenty long for leverage and use a vise grip as a "handle". You will have to do all the bending in one motion to keep the round stock from springing back before you are done.
Reply:Maybe even a 2.75" OD pipe. Trial and error comes into play here.
Reply:already covered.
Reply:Thanks guys. I knew I would learn something here. Ed - on your link, your pipe is pretty much what I had in mind, but I didn't know just how to start. I can take advantage of what you have already figured out. That will save me a lot of trial and error. Reply:Could you just slice a piece off of pipe and grind the seam inside to make a ring?Go hot, or go home! |
