Hey guys, is anyone on here a UP railroad welder or machinist? If so what exactly do u do on a day to day basis, what's the pay like, and what would be the best way to get into a job like that?-Mitch
Reply:Years ago when I was looking to get in to UP or BNSF, even though I had a relative who was with UP for years and years, the only way to get in was to go through the gov't jobs program. The local DES office had applications whenever the railroads were hiring.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:From experience go to thier web site and look for the craft you are interesed in. Applications are done online. The online test you take IS TIMED. If everything is done correctly you may be invited to a hirring session in the location you chose and you better live there, They can be verry picky. Answer one question wrong in a hirring session and your out. BUT its all about the penstion in the long run if you can stict it out . The RR is one of the only jobs where they spend thousands to train you and the rest of your career trying to fire you and thats a quote almost anybody in train and engine service will back up
Reply:Thanks guys. I was also wondering, and may as well not start another thread to ask it, but has anyone welded in the US military? If so, can you give me information on what that was like, and any advice about which branch to go and what I can expect if i did four years of welding in the US military?thanks ahead,Mitch
Reply:The rail road has to be one of the hardest jobs to get but if you get on your set for life pretty much. Can't really fire you for anything

Reply:just thought of somthing to add . go on any Class 1 rail road web site and their different crafts and requirements and resposibillites are very will explained. They are really interested in a steady work history and shift work. But like I mentioned before the pensions are fantastic.
