I just got a Millermatic 211 yesterday. I told the guys to fix me up with everything I needed but I guess I didnt pay close enough attention to what I was getting. At any rate I bought a 220V, 25' extension cord for about $75. When I got home I realized that the plug style was the wrong type for my outlets however it does match the welder socket. My extension cord looks like this: http://www.stayonline.com/images/nem...nema_5-50p.gifand my outlet style looks like this: http://www.stayonline.com/images/nem...nema_7-20p.gif I am not exactly sure what the plug is rated for right now. I do know that the breaker is rated at 40A.I will not be able to modify the wiring of the hosue because its a rental and im sure the owner will refuse to install a new one unless I offer to pay for it all. The good thing is the MM211 can run on 110V also but all my 110V outlets have 15A breakers so I can only go so high. What are my options here? Can I just cut the end off the cord or make an adapter and use it with this outlet? Does the different outlet style mean that it is not possible to use this? Thanks for the help!
Reply:you didn't say but I am assuming that it was a two pole 40 amp breaker??? nema_7-20p??? I would have thought it would have been something else, a range receptacle would be similar but a flat blade for the ground I would think it would be unlikely to find a rental set up with an outlet for a welder -- most landlords wouldn't approve of welding I wouldn't thinkassuming it is a 2pole 40 breaker, I'd just make an adapter. checkHere for some ideasfred
Reply:What about installing your own temporary line? One that you can just take with you when you move, without causing any damage. That is, if the line you have now is insufficent.
Reply:Take a Pic of the Breaker and the Outlet.Did the Landlord have an RV? Looks like a TT-30r which is a 30amp 120v receptacle. Are you sure the Ground slot is rounded?Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:a 5-50p is not a 220v rated outlet. It is a 110v outletThe cord you purchased is incorrect.(unless the link is not exactly what you bought)The recp you have is 30amp 125/250vac or a standard 3 wire dryer recp, but the link to the recp you say you have is actually a 20amp 277vac rec????? I doubt that this is really what you have in a home, that is the only reason i think you have a dryer recp. You will need to cut the male cord end off of the extension cord and install a Nema 10-30p to plug it in. Any home store should have one.Hope this helps.
Reply:It is probably a NEMA 10-50Rhttp://frentzandsons.com/Hardware%20...o.htm#50%20Amp.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:I imagine he has a 6-50 Extension cord since he purchased the welder and Ext. cord from the same place. He is just using the wrong Plug and receptacle names and wrong drawings he has found on the Web.Just read your edit- Take a Photo Last edited by Broccoli1; 05-06-2009 at 12:02 PM.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:Crap guys i am dumb! The plug is not like I described at all. I am uploading some pics and I will get back asap.
Reply:OK It looks like the plug is a NEMA 10-30R. The plug says 30A 125/250V however the breaker is 40A.Here are the pics:
Reply:All good now!!You just need to make a Pigtail adapter or replace the end on the new Extension cord with a 10-30 PlugAs long as the wires in the wall are good for 40amps the 40 amp CB is fineEd Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Thank you! That is what I was hoping to hear.I am just assuming that if the breaker was 40A then they ran at least 40A wire. I will take a look at the wire and see what it says (its visible).
Reply:If you do not want to cut up your new Welder Ext. cord you can make a Pigtail cheaply by going to the Box store and buying a Replacement Dryer Cord- will look just like what you have in your hand- and then wire up a 6-50r on the other end.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:I ended up buying a replacement plug and re-wired it. The guy at home depot was shocked that I even considered making an adapter.Anyway the welder produces much better welds with 220V. I probably wont even use the 110V connection unless i am in a pinch. |
