Vertical Welds

So just what is the secret of welding vertical?? I gave it a quick try and had quite a blob of metal to grind off. Are there any online instructional HOWTO's  for welding?180c MIG
Reply:Trial and error.. There are volumes of secrets on vertical up mig welding.  I guess aside from your initial machine setup, hang out on the sides 2 times longer than the middle of the weld... That might get you in the ball park.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:There is no "secret"  just practice and have the heat right.A weave is easier for me, start on one side, pause move to the other side, pause, move back , pause......... When you start to move to the other side, stay in the puddle then start to go up.  LIke a zig zag with pauses on both sides.It took me a LONG time to get the hang of it.Its easier to learn to do a fillet than a groove.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:The most important part to remember is that gavity is at work at all times!  the molten pool is like water...wanting to run downhill,,,so what the Weave is trying to do for you is "catch it before it drips"  the reason for the pause at the end of the waeve id to give the pool a chance to cool (just a second) so its "solid enough" to hold up the next pass above it....think of it as a little sandbag wall.You'll quickly develop a feel for that cooling period (more of a 'Flash-off", actually) that will also translate well in learning to weld thin sheet metal."Good Enough Never Is"MIller AC/DC  ThunderboltHobart HH180, 125EZRiland Cut 40 Plasma oxy/act  outfitTons of "stuff", all treasures to me!
