Have the Stickmate and work area, and a project ready to go, then thought about personal protection.  After neighbor showed me some rather nasty looking burn areas on his wrists just from the opening in sleeve where button is, thought I should go further.  So bought the cape from Harbor Freight that has built in leather sleeves, and bought a leather apron.  BUT, a huge gap between the apron and cape at each shoulder/chest area.I do wood working also and have seen a wide leather apron that covers from neck to knees, and shoulders, to keep the wood chips off.  I know leather will be hot, but I get to pick weather for when I want to weld outside (Don't know how the real welders do it...really tough guys!)Other than an expensive leather coat, what do you guys use.  I really do not want burns!  I was around welding operations for many years when designing and building the nuke power plants but did not pay attention to stuff that might help ME some day...other than not to glow .  A really dumb move (or lack of action really) on my part..no, the clothing... not the glowing part.Solderer huh...well, I guess so...in a pinch.

Reply:Chris, you just need a long sleeve 100% cotton shirt, the leather cape you already bought is fine.  I'd add a good set of welding gloves.  The cuff or gauntlet on a welders glove will overlap your shirt cuffs.  This will keep you from burning your wrists.  Don't forget your Z87.1 safety glasses and a good pair of leather work boots....Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:I burned 10 lbs of rod today using fire retardant sleeves and regular style leather gloves with no problems. The sleeves have elastic cuffs and tuck into the gloves very well. I left too many buttons undone on my shirt but cause my neck is a bit ichy. Been meaning to get a helmet skirt. Your milage may very . I have seen folks that will get sun burned through a white or light colored shirt. I suspect that your friend may burn easly.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:All great suggestionsEvery once in a while something will get into the clothes, or on top of your head.  I guess it's something you live withThe sleeves are great.  I never had any until this Winter, and I really like them."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:For  in position & most vertical welding I use the green fire retardent protected, 100% cotton jackets  Most all welding supplies have them for around $16.00 - $20.00.    They are machine washable too just don't use liquid fabric softener when washing.    Must remove the fire retardant.I have goofed & used softener.    At that point I guess they become like an extra heavy duty cotton shirt.I've used the sleeves too & like them.   Only problem there is I go through many more shirts.   Burn the middle out of the front.  Not long till they are like screen wire & have arc burn that looks like the measles.IF IT WORKS, DON'T FIX IT2 Lincoln CV-300 / LN-7 GMALinde-VI 253,400 & 450 w/MIG35 feedersCNC Table with Oxweld O/A & Hypertherm 1250G3Lincoln Ranger GXT 250Hobart-MicroWire 300ESAB Heliarc 161ESAB-Mobilemaster 2 CC/CV Feeders& more
Reply:When I'm doing alot of stick welding I wear the full leather jacket, especially if there's any overhead joints to weld, or if I'll be laying under a car.   Otherwise, apron and sleeves, or fire retard jacket with built in leather sleeves, work fine most of the time.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:Keep the hair!!!!!!!!!!!!I still fool with the backwards ball cap, but the things aren't made out of cotton anymore it seems.  Some sort of synthetic stuffPicked up a beanie at the LWSI still get hot slag on the noggin when I chip sometimes.  I don't like close fitting things on my head, and switch to a ball cap right away.  And the stuff sometimes is still hot enough to penetrate the cap, and find a home on my dome.  Half the problem is probably since I switched to the beannie, I'm wearing summer caps again with the mesh."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:IN OTHER WORDS, THIS IS NOT A GOOD CAP FOR STUFF ABOVE YOUR HEAD!!!!!!!!!And sometimes it's not too hot when you think it's past the danger point.  You're still working with hot stuff.I probably got little brown spots on the top of my head.  Only the lady that cuts my hair knows I guessWinter cotton cap, or beannie Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:I have their gloves and the X-Pad. The jury is still out on whether it's worth the money or not. Also that X-Hood gets hot as hell.
