I Am rebuilding a bucket similar to this one, Does anyone know what alloy steel these are? Also the shop foreman told me to use the 7018 rod we have but shouldent i be using something with more t strength.... I will be ordering ar14 5/8 plate for the sides and grousers.
Reply:i usually use 7018 or a regular er70-s6 wire on the mig, they stay together fine if you have enough juice-NateMiller Trailblazer 302gMiller Spoolmatic 30aLN-25 x 2Idealarc SP200Hypertherm Powermax 600
Reply:This bucket is used at a stone quarry and takes EXTREME abuse. im just wondering if mixing the alloys of the bucket,ar plate, and filler would increase the risk of cracking. I will be using Stick 6011 and 7018 mostly but some mig (for grousers, just faster) with 70-s and Stargon (90%AR-8%Co2-2%o2)And i would like to find something between 55-60 R Hardness range for some Hardfacing.
Reply:Copperpot  Mig the whole mess it will be fine. Do them all the time and yes two of my buckets are in rock ten hours a day.  As far as hard facing , Stoody 101HC or Lincor 60 but both weld horrible out of position ,but with a small bucket you can flop it any way you want .  good luckg
Reply:ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!  You just brought back some bad memories for me.  I had to change the entire teeth set up on one of these.  But this was back when I was an employee for my cheap *** buddy.  He bought new teeth assemblies but they wheren't for a geith bucket.  But I made them fit, by putting 1" thick spacers under the tooth inside the bucket.   I took the beat to death POS miller 250 we had and cranked it up all the way.  I must have made 50 passes to built it all up into the new teeth.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A  Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers
Reply:Ill plan on mig welding most of it. Thanks for the tip on hardfacing rod. Ill be using the miller 250 as well, hope i dont melt the whip on this peashooter. lol"My fingernails are melting"
Reply:I wouldn;t run the 6011.  Run either the 7018 or the mig.  On equipment bevel the joints and run the 7018 or ER 70s-6 all the way.  It's all I have ever used on buckets, and I've never had a problem.  You said you were gonna use AR 14???  do you mean AR400?  I am not familiar with AR 14.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:hahaha yes AR400!!!  sorry. im just going to use the 6011 on the root passes, with a little preheat 200deg and watch for cracking. Im going to bevel it to 45deg. and leave an open root with backer plate.after im done filling, ill flip over and back gouge the root and check with red dye, two of the teeth, and what they were welded to actually broke off. then cut the sides out and plate them, the sides are like 1/8in thick. At this point there is no sense in keeping them.Ill cut back to where there is some meat left."My fingernails are melting"
Reply:Stoody 101HC or Lincor 60
Reply:I would use dual shield wire it burns in better and is best for heavy plate.

Reply:You might consider using Vertiwear600 for your hardfacing work.  I've used it and unlike a lot of hardfacing wires, this one welds easily out-of-position.  It is a gas shielded wire, and you'll need a CV power supply with some muscle to get the best performance.http://www.hobartbrothers.com/pdf/da...rtiWear600.pdfI don't know what your bucket is made of, but Geith has a webpage.  You could email them and ask...http://www.geith.com/Sounds like others have welded these with XX18 fillers without a problem.  The bucket is probably a low alloy carbon steel, A514 or something similar.  Your AR400 plate should work fine.  For ideal performance, I'd step up to a higher strength filler metal, 9018 or 10018 for stick welding.  ER80 wire is somewhere between E7018 and E9018 in terms of performance.Preheating all the joints to 250-350°F will also improve the quality of the results and help reduce any distortion that will happen.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
