hi everyone,i had my thermal arc 185 at my front step .my problem is there plug for 220 is smaller then my 4 prong seymore and pass, 220 plug /outlet box .i dont have the 4th leg wired at single phase on my other welder , or junction boxes ,it just wh,bl, gr,with red taped over , coming out of my welders, now would you cut there plug off, and buy a male 220plug to match my junction box and rest of my welder pugs,or make a pig tail with out cutting the plug off this new machine. i dont want to be cutting anything.i have a 50 amp in my electric box panel for my welders/which runs my miller cst 280 no problem.so i no it is not a problem for the 185. what would you rccomend thanks
Reply:I would make a pig tail or come off your other plug in and put the one to match your new welder next to it. I wouldn't cut anything it may void your warnty..
Reply:Broad head,Your typing and spelling and punctuation is a little difficult to read, but I think that you are asking if you can use another 220 plug other than the 4 prong type you have rigged for your Miller machine.  Is that right?Yes,  most 220 single phase wiring use a three prong type plug.  If you have a black white and red wire on your TA185, then it must be for 220 3 phase.  The red wire should be for the third leg.   It is also possible that your machine can be used for either 3 or 1 phase.  If it is, simply tape the red wire and use a 3 prong welder plug available at most hardware stores or welding supply outlets.   You, of course, will need to wire the plug into your circuit.  50 amp should be adequate for the 185.  Although I am no certified electrician,  I have wired a few things in my day and so far haven't had a fire dept. emergency visit.  Be sure to get the welder receptacles instead of the range or dryer configurations.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:The TA185 is a single-phase-only machine, unless he has a special model made for overseas markets where they may have different power requirements.   The TA200 is both single phase and 3-phase.The 3 wires comming out of the TA185, if it is for US market, are 2 hots and a ground, with green being the ground. If you electrical service is only single phase and that 50A breaker is single phase, I would change the 3-phase outlet you have to a NEMA 6-50R, which is a 250v single phase 3-wire outlet, and change all the machine plugs to match that outlet (NEMA 6-50P plugs).   Tape off the red 3rd leg hot wire on the machines and use the other 3 with the new plugs.   Using a 3-phase 4-wire outlet on a single-phase circuit, while it won't hurt anything if you know what it really is, isn't exactly kosher with electrical code.   Better to just fix it right and avoid confusion in the future.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
