Hi there, I am practicing for the first time pipe welding with 6010 5p+.I am having some problems with it, I have tried to use the 6010 on DC+ and DC- ,  I found much easier on the DC-, am I supposed to use it on DC - ?I am welding on 10mm thick pipe , 2mm root face 2,4mm gap, any advices on this? The bead doesn't look regular on the inside, I am using Lincoln Fleetweld 5P+ 1/8".Thanks in advance
Reply:What machine are you running, how many amps, and what position is the pipe?Miller Dynasty 300dxSpeedglas 9002XMiller Spectrum 375 XtremeLincoln PowerMig 255xtLincoln PowerMig 140cMilwuakee Portaband

Reply:I don't have any pics with me right now will have some tomorrow. It's a 6" pipe on the 6G position, gap 3/32 and the face is 3/32 as well, will give a try again tomorrou on DC+.I have to learn how to weld with this rod in 2 weeks time, do you guys think this is possible?
Reply:Anything is possible. Going uphill on the root you'll want to stair step it in there. Keep the keyhole open and work it up. The root should lay out nicely on the inside, almost look like you welded it from the inside. Should see little ripples. No suck back on the inside of the root. 3/32 land and gap, 1/8" 5p+ I'd set it around 90-95 amps and see how it goes then go up/down from there depending on how it feels.aka Cumminsguy71 at other forums....would not work here??

Reply:Hey klb what's the difference running the 5 p uphill or downhill. I've heard guys talkin about doin it both ways and I don't have a whole lot of smaw pipe welding experience. I mainly run hardwire root with flux core uphill. I'm practicing my smaw 6 g test as well and was curious
Reply:I did this weld this morning, I know it still looks like crap but it's getting bettereverytime I leave the keyhole open too much I always have problems, I'm not used to this rod yet and everytime I start on the keyhole I can't close it easily.
Reply:Drop your gap back to about 1.5mm and put the heat around 110-120,   it'll go in easier running DC-1/8 is 3.2mm?If you get the practice in there's no reason you won't be readyI'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.

Reply:yeah 3.2mm is 1/8"...I'm using an ESAB Inverter don't know wich model is it.I have two weeks to practice so I can get my B pressure ticket...That pipe was on DC +  it burns a bit diferent but just like everything I have to get used to it... Will post some more pics tomorrowLast edited by maneshu; 07-27-2009 at 10:10 AM.
Reply:Maneshu,Many inverters don't have the low end voltage required to burn the 6010.  I was recently looking into this. The voltage needs to be high to burn the 6010.  Try a DC transformer machine.  I bet you will get it the first or second try.If you can't get a transformer machine,  see if your ESAB has an arc force control.  If it does, turn it up and push in on the rod.  That should help.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:It looks to me like you are getting there, I think you just need some more hood time.  The guy that taught me to open root 6010 had me using 1/8 rod with a 3/32 gap and a feather edge on the bevel.  Just push it in he kept telling me, I think I ran at about 80 amps last time.  If you're doing it right the arc should be on the inside of the pipe.- If you can jump across it you can weld it!  - anonymous old boilermaker
Reply:If you are having a 1/8 gap, turn your heat down to around 70 amps. Your pics look like you are in too heavy. You should be stuffing it up and in the keyhole on the underside and by the time you reach the top you are not pushing it in so hard and more or less floating the root in. If it starts to open up, your instincts will tell you to step out further to let the puddle cool but ignore that and pause in the keyhole a little longer to let it fill. If that does not work, then your heat is still too high.3/32 land, 3/32 gap, 6010 1/8th inch and 70 amps.It looks like you are getting it in there, but its very inconsistent. I cant see your tie ins, but I would expect that they are ok given it looks like it went in super hot.

Reply:Up...I didn't take any pics today but it's getting better...
