Hey guysNot sure of what keywords to use in a search so I hope its not a repost. When doing general body work on a car, before welding sheet metal or anything else on a car, what precautions have to be taken ?  e.g. Disconnecting the battery or grounds etc. I dont want to damage anything like the computer etc. ThanksSomeone needs to make an auto-darkening Predator welding helmet...complete with dreads and multiple spectra of IR vision.
Reply:The way most cars are wired you may need to disconnect more than the battery to keep the computer safe. Removing the computer may be the better way. Some cars have electronic dash displays that have their own computers or are driven by the main computer. I’ve seen a close lightning strike fry the cars computer without ever touching the car. Go figure!!
Reply:I've always heard it's important to disconnect the battery.  And yet, all over the world, welders are using their trucks as welding tables without any electrical drama at all.  Can anybody explain this to me?
Reply:Disconnecting the battery is a good start. Removing the computer may cause more harm than good unless you make sure you are grounded at the time to keep a static electric discharge from occurring. Best bet would be to keep the work clamp as close to the weld as possible
Reply:I disconnect the battery and hook ground clamp as close to what I'm welding on and haven't had a problem yet
Reply:Don't ground on the cpu. Here learning to turn down the Suck...
